I don't know where the -20 is Mike, it's in the teens above zero now, and nothing too cold in the near future!

Oh well, that's why the make December and January!! grin

Well the low temp for Ely on the morning of Nov 27 was 20 below zero!...Some spots will see 10-15 below temps early next week with some 20 below readings possible if clear skies and near calm winds take place.

Went out of the Van Vac landing today and drilled a hole and measured 11 inches.

Thanks for checking. If the forecast holds we are going to make a lot of ice in the next 10 days.

About the same as over on Vermilion. Around 8in of snow that is drifting. Still able to get around with trucks but like Cliff said ATVs might have issues. Good for snowmobiles. smile

Well not going to make the opener but will be up there the weekend after on the 24th. Hopefully the snow doesn't get to heavy by then? Hate the slush! frown

Thanks for the report on Burntside. I've been looking over the reports but like around home, 30 miles one way or another can make a difference on conditions.

We're getting some snow 'round here now and the report for Ely was 2-6 inches for today, then nothing for 7 more days. Knowing there's about 8 now helps quite a bit for planning. smile

Just got back from a ride on Burntside. The trails are staked but not groomed. There is about 8in of snow on the lake right now. Some areas are pretty bumpy with the drifts. So if you are going to be pulling a sled/portable make sure to pad your gear. It will take a beating in the open areas. Riding was a lot smoother between islands and protected bays. I drilled a hand full of holes in a few different areas of the lake. I found 13-16in of clear ice. Most holes were around 14-15in. They are also calling for real cold temps for the next few days, so we should make even more ice before next weekend.

I only heard 1-3in of snow today. There is light snow falling right now. The wind is supposed to pick up tonight and blow pretty good until Saturday. So the snow on the lake will continue to drift.

I did NOT check the north arm. Usually there is less ice up there.

Here's my weather plan for the Ely area.

No snow until Jan 24th when we come up Laker fishing. Then about a week later 2 feet for sledding! Sorry Mike! grin

No problem. I hadn't taken a ride in a while, so it was fun. smile

I forgot to add that I did NOT check the north arm. Usually there is less ice up there.

leech,

No new sled, same one as last year, but it is a 2009 so alot "newer" to me than my previous '95 indy trail grin

You guys gonna be up both days next weekend? Dylan has b-ball tournaments the next two Saturdays, so sundays are my only option. Maybe I will put it off for a week and run up the 25th?

Yes, we are going to be up there the 24 & 25th staying at the Paddle.

And Wanderer, if I wanted someone to correct my wording I would go on the Silly Town thread where no one even wipes their butt right for most of those folks on there! grin

Yes, if you see a Black Arctic Cat snowmobile pulling a Clam Voyager with two guys riding on it, say Hi! wink

This spring I saw a lot of grouse and even a few broods. I'm hopeful for the upland season. Didn't see a whole lot of mallard ducklings this year but good numbers of wood ducks. I think the Canada geese numbers go up every year.

My uncle and dad said they aren’t seeing any young birds and not many up north. Bummer Hazel is ready and Finn wants some ducks .

Just got back from my annual 3 day fishing trip to my brother's cabin.  My dad, brother, nephew and I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday fishing 4 lakes.(Evergreen,  Grace, Plantaganet and Cass.)  Caught lots of sunfish, crappie,  perch and a couple walleye.  Perch on Cass were 10-12 inches. Crappie were mostly 10 to 11. Some 12's.  Sunfish ran 8-9 inches.  Walleye was tough but managed a 14, 15 and 17. My brother and nephew did better than my dad and I. They have much better quality rods and could feel the bites much better, plus they used gulp vs our live bait mostly. They did better using 3 inch gulp than smaller ones as well. I'm definitely investing in a new quality rod. Plus I need to get more confidence on plastic.  Overall a very good trip.

Fall lake has nobody there and yes you have to use portage wheels to get across. At prairie portage you don't cross the border, so you don't have to go through customs. However right next to prairie portage there is a Canadian customs building if you wanted to enter into Canada. I don't know anything about it other than it is there.

Grouse season is right around the corner, my Italian 20-gauge SxS sidelock is still available for trade. 25" barrels, ejectors, single selective trigger, great early season grouse thumper, and in excellent condition for a fifty-year-old gun.   Jim

I was thinking of the fall lake portage,  isn't there someone there too?    Or is it just portage wheels to get boat across? And if you go at prairie portage, isn't that a border crossing, so customs and all that?   I love Quetico BTW
