SAUK LAKE ICE FISHING - 2014 - 15

Recommended Posts

Hello all. I don't get back home all to often but wanted to get something on here for others to post upon. My dad and I are planning to fish by Dutchmen's on saturday and haven't heard anything going on other than Hooper's.

I guess I am curious as to how much ice someone has found in this area or if anyone can at least let me know of fishing activity around the lake.

Thanks in advance!

Sander v.

Looking out at the lake near the camel's hump. Just froze over last night! Be careful out on Sauk. Houses out just north of Gull Point. 3"-4" just north of there.

What point is considered Gull Pt? Where/what is the camels hump? Are you referring to the 'hump' that Diamond Point Restaurant sits atop?

Dutchman's kinda in the middle, right? Out from the golf course? I had thanks giving at a house on the lake. Could see the golf course area and that section of the lake. Not a soul out there.

You are right. Dutchmen's Creek comes into the lake on the eastern shore, nearly straight across from Greystone. I took a drive out there yesterday morning and saw no one either. I can only imagine not many would venture that far until they can drive because of the distance from either of the public access points.

Sander,

Any luck at Dutchmen's on your trip? I will be visiting my parents this week and plan on fishing Dutchmen's on Saturday.

Sander,

We fished for about two hours in 34 - 36 FOW and didn't mark much. We weren't the first to fish the area much to my surprise. Someone had come from the south via ATV and punched a few holes and fished in the same area. There was about 8inches of ice the Saturday following thanksgiving.

We had a few fish suspended 10 -15 ft off of the bottom but couldn't get them to chase. Put the camera down and didn't see a single Crappie. Plenty of 5 -6 in perch holding tight to the bottom if thats your cup of tea. All in all should have gone to Osakis. Let us know how it goes.

If you aren't finding fish deep, check out the shallower break lines, they may be holding tight to the bottom there. We didn't check.

Its been a while since being on the good old Hot Spot Outdoors Forum but glad to see Sander v. is keeping the Sauk Centre area report up and going. I like seeing other peoples catches and reports from the area. If I knew how to upload pictures I would but haven't figured that out yet!! You can call me slow if you want...

Well the solid Ice is here and everyones moving in!! Crappies are biting but better get there in the early morning before the sun comes up because the perch move in once the sun is up the crappies seem to disappear. We have been fishing the Red Barn area and doing fairly well, enough for the frying pan anyway. No need to keep limits when my family can't eat all of them anyhow. The night bite has been hit and miss. Some of the nights we are doing really well with a lot of schools of fish coming through and then the next night, NOTHING! The weather definatly has somthing to do with it but Hey fishing is still better than working no matter how bad the fishing is.

I have been wanting to get my spear house out on Sauk as I have noticed the water clarity has been really good this year. Wondering if anyone on here spears on Sauk Lake at all north of the 71 bridge?? There are a few spear shakes out but there seems to be less this year for some reason, We need to get those little gators!!

Happy Fishing everyone and Happy New Year.

To those of you who like to cut down the middle of the lake from one end to the other, this is not the year for that. The middle just froze over around christmas time.I watched a side x side and a car go over it today and somehow they made it from what i could see when i lost site of them but that does not mean the next one will.

I must be real lucky, caught another healthy one, 30"  in the shallows tonight less than 6 FOW.

Dude, I already trolled that spot, nothing but slimmers!  😄 Glad I saved money by stopping smoking a while ago. It's free most of the summer now! Been calm and yellow out for days! 🤧

Bet you would enjoy a nice paddle down the Cahulawassee River, too then. 😏

Talked to my neighbor is getting ready for a trip via fall lake.    They use small boats with like 10 to 25 hp outboards and portage wheels.   There are two portages to get into pipestone bay, with the second one being over a hill.   From pipestone they can go around to Jackfish? bay,   There is a big sign to warn about where the no motors area is.

On the South End... The walleye and sauger bite continues to be very good with anglers enjoying consistent action.  As we transition into fall, fish are being found at various depths, but 25 - 32 feet of water has been consistent. Jigging continues to pick up as the waters cool.  Water temps this week are down to 64.  Top jig colors this week include gold, orange, chartreuse, and pink.  For some anglers, big numbers caught this week jigging with frozen emerald shiners on the lake.   Some anglers are jigging on or adjacent to structure.  Others are finding schools of walleyes and saugers out over deep mud.  Using sonar to find fish is helpful.     Spinners and trolling crankbaits continue to produce fish as well.  This is a transition time where multiple presentations are working.  As the season progresses, jigging will take over as the top technique.     For those pulling spinners, gold, pink, orange, glow red, or glow white has been successful. Adjust your weights to 2 - 3 ounces to match the depth and speed you are drifting / trolling. Trolling crankbaits is still producing nice walleyes.  Some goto colors are gold, chrome / blue, pink UV firetiger, and chartreuse.     More and more walleyes are showing up along the south shore.  It seems things are gravitating towards fall patterns where good numbers of the fish are both chasing shiners and moving closer to shorelines.  The bite has been excellent and is really shaping up nicely for the fall jig bite both on the lake and in the Rainy River. On the Rainy River... A variety of species continue to be caught on the Rainy River.  Nice current flow is providing fall anglers some optimism for this year's fall shiner and walleye run being a banner year.  Some reports of nice walleyes being caught in the river already this week.   There are reports of shiners in the river all the way up to Birchdale.  Things seem to be setting up nice for a great fall on the river.  Mother Nature will have the final say of course. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with cooling waters.  Anglers anchor up and use a combination of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig with a flat no roll sinker.     Find a hole in the river or simply mark these big fish in an area, anchor up and soak some crawlers! Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the NW Angle remains really good. Fish are being found in many areas.  Structure, neck down areas as well as on the flats.   Some good fish are still holding in the deep mud east and northeast of Little Oak Island in the mud.  Areas around Four Blocks, and north of Garden Island producing fish as well.    As on the south end, jigging, spinners / crawlers and trolling crankbaits are all producing walleyes.   Smallmouth bass, pike and muskies are also being caught, both by unsuspecting walleye anglers and when targeted.  As the waters cool, crappies and jumbo perch are also showing up nicely for anglers.
