I was past there this weekend and they are closed anybody know why?

Just went by this weekend as well and just don't get it? They were always busy? Maybe another business affected by the lake management! frown

Yeah, they were having a "going out of business" sale a while ago. I'm sad to see them go....they always had great bait at good prices.

I'd be surprised if a similar business didn't start back up there, but with the decreased traffic around the lake recently, who knows.

That went out mid October, MEA weekend. I stopped there on my way up North and the place was packed. everything in the store was half off except lotto tickets and tobacco. The place had been picked clean in a few hours. It sucks it was a great place to stop they had everything. Hit that place up,everytime I went to the lake.

I am really bummed! It was a great place to get gas, bait, last min tackle, munches, but most of all a nice place to take a good dump(word not changed) before going out on the lake all day with the sled and porty! Now where? shockedlaugh

Chicken strips at the gas station in Wahkon are delicious!

I cannot confirm, but was told that the owners of Meleen's are moving to Wisconsin. Possibly running/owning a resort. I was hoping to find a news story, but no dice. I'm sure this will boost business at Lundeen's.

I always liked stopping there as well for gas, bait, and snacks all in one stop. I did a quick Google search and came up with a report from the EPA regarding their underground fuel storage and it looks like they received a fine totaling over 100k in 2013. Maybe that was the beginning of the end for them?

There has to be something behind this other than lack of business because that place was always packed. The funny thing is my buddy and I used to do everything in our power to avoid Meleens. Not because we didn't like the place but because every time we went in there we each shelled out $50-100 buying food, bait, lures, gas. Reality is we never avoided it because it was so nice to have a one stop shop and as mentioned a place to dump!! It was scary what I spent in that place one year.

My Dad would not spend a penny there becuase he told me that the owner screwed his brother over they had a partnership and basically took the whole store out from underneath him years ago. Maybe he got what he deserved?

No idea if there is anything to it...... heard from a mostly reliable tribal member that they made an offer the owner couldn't refuse.

It's possible.

Nope, that's another rumor. I haven't talked to Paul or anyone that works for him but have been told by a pretty reliable source that the bank took it back. The bank is Woodlands Bank which is owned by the Mille Lacs Tribe so you had one part correct. It went up for sheriff sale and none of the offers were accepted so it now owned by Woodlands Bank.

Paul owned it with his uncle years ago . Not his brother ! And they didn't see eye to eye and Paul bought him out , I worked there at the time .

The word on the streets in Onamia is he striped all the money out of that gas station to fund his resort in Wisconsin, now the woodlands bank owns it which is Indian owned , so now it'll be another Indian gas station

What sportfish said is what I have heard, even moved a few of the gas station employees out to Wisconsin to work at the resort. The same thing happened to izaty's a while back, the only difference is, that guy pulled as much out of the resort he could and put it in his pocket. I don't think he has worked since.

  • 1 month later...

The band bought it and it will be opening again. My girlfriend works for them and is in charge of staffing it. No surprise to me.

Dude, I already trolled that spot, nothing but slimmers!  😄 Glad I saved money by stopping smoking a while ago. It's free most of the summer now! Been calm and yellow out for days! 🤧

Bet you would enjoy a nice paddle down the Cahulawassee River, too then. 😏

Talked to my neighbor is getting ready for a trip via fall lake.    They use small boats with like 10 to 25 hp outboards and portage wheels.   There are two portages to get into pipestone bay, with the second one being over a hill.   From pipestone they can go around to Jackfish? bay,   There is a big sign to warn about where the no motors area is.

On the South End... The walleye and sauger bite continues to be very good with anglers enjoying consistent action.  As we transition into fall, fish are being found at various depths, but 25 - 32 feet of water has been consistent. Jigging continues to pick up as the waters cool.  Water temps this week are down to 64.  Top jig colors this week include gold, orange, chartreuse, and pink.  For some anglers, big numbers caught this week jigging with frozen emerald shiners on the lake.   Some anglers are jigging on or adjacent to structure.  Others are finding schools of walleyes and saugers out over deep mud.  Using sonar to find fish is helpful.     Spinners and trolling crankbaits continue to produce fish as well.  This is a transition time where multiple presentations are working.  As the season progresses, jigging will take over as the top technique.     For those pulling spinners, gold, pink, orange, glow red, or glow white has been successful. Adjust your weights to 2 - 3 ounces to match the depth and speed you are drifting / trolling. Trolling crankbaits is still producing nice walleyes.  Some goto colors are gold, chrome / blue, pink UV firetiger, and chartreuse.     More and more walleyes are showing up along the south shore.  It seems things are gravitating towards fall patterns where good numbers of the fish are both chasing shiners and moving closer to shorelines.  The bite has been excellent and is really shaping up nicely for the fall jig bite both on the lake and in the Rainy River. On the Rainy River... A variety of species continue to be caught on the Rainy River.  Nice current flow is providing fall anglers some optimism for this year's fall shiner and walleye run being a banner year.  Some reports of nice walleyes being caught in the river already this week.   There are reports of shiners in the river all the way up to Birchdale.  Things seem to be setting up nice for a great fall on the river.  Mother Nature will have the final say of course. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with cooling waters.  Anglers anchor up and use a combination of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig with a flat no roll sinker.     Find a hole in the river or simply mark these big fish in an area, anchor up and soak some crawlers! Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the NW Angle remains really good. Fish are being found in many areas.  Structure, neck down areas as well as on the flats.   Some good fish are still holding in the deep mud east and northeast of Little Oak Island in the mud.  Areas around Four Blocks, and north of Garden Island producing fish as well.    As on the south end, jigging, spinners / crawlers and trolling crankbaits are all producing walleyes.   Smallmouth bass, pike and muskies are also being caught, both by unsuspecting walleye anglers and when targeted.  As the waters cool, crappies and jumbo perch are also showing up nicely for anglers.
