LOTW Ice Cover

Recommended Posts

It looks like it's capped? Of course, some thin clouds right over the middle of the lake. Either it's fresh ice or no ice through the middle of the big basin - for reference of open water, Shoal Lake is still wide open. A few different color views.

A few of the resorts had some f-book updates a few days ago that mentioned it was getting close. It has been nothing short of windy here for nearly the past 2 weeks.

Today's shot. Looks covered, some really rough stuff on the West side from Rocky to Stoney Point, big crack to Buffalo Point.

South wind is whipping about 20mph sustained right now.

While it looks darker/clearer than the rest, I don't believe 4 mile bay is open. I read reports from Wheeler's Point Resort that mentioned they were crossing the bay to check the lake ice on the other side of Pine Island.

Looks pretty locked up. Maybe a crack by Rocky/Long point?

With last night, today and tonight's temps it should be pretty healed.

From what I've read, ATV/SxS traffic is starting on Friday. Call your resorts, check their websites or Facebook pages for up to the minute conditions. Be safe everyone!

Hey are those smaller lakes to the north and east of LOTW alot deeper or why are they still wide open?

There are a lot of deep shield lakes in that area, so that could be one of the reasons. Could be current as well.

Certainly looked locked up in front of our place. The wind sure was not nice to the ice this year. Lots of busted up ice piles out there as far out as I can see with binos.

No doubt jerkbait. The best way to describe it out from Morris Point is a bowl of corn flakes. Rough and loud, constantly breaking shards of ice.

This spring I saw a lot of grouse and even a few broods. I'm hopeful for the upland season. Didn't see a whole lot of mallard ducklings this year but good numbers of wood ducks. I think the Canada geese numbers go up every year.

My uncle and dad said they aren’t seeing any young birds and not many up north. Bummer Hazel is ready and Finn wants some ducks .

Just got back from my annual 3 day fishing trip to my brother's cabin.  My dad, brother, nephew and I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday fishing 4 lakes.(Evergreen,  Grace, Plantaganet and Cass.)  Caught lots of sunfish, crappie,  perch and a couple walleye.  Perch on Cass were 10-12 inches. Crappie were mostly 10 to 11. Some 12's.  Sunfish ran 8-9 inches.  Walleye was tough but managed a 14, 15 and 17. My brother and nephew did better than my dad and I. They have much better quality rods and could feel the bites much better, plus they used gulp vs our live bait mostly. They did better using 3 inch gulp than smaller ones as well. I'm definitely investing in a new quality rod. Plus I need to get more confidence on plastic.  Overall a very good trip.

Fall lake has nobody there and yes you have to use portage wheels to get across. At prairie portage you don't cross the border, so you don't have to go through customs. However right next to prairie portage there is a Canadian customs building if you wanted to enter into Canada. I don't know anything about it other than it is there.

Grouse season is right around the corner, my Italian 20-gauge SxS sidelock is still available for trade. 25" barrels, ejectors, single selective trigger, great early season grouse thumper, and in excellent condition for a fifty-year-old gun.   Jim

I was thinking of the fall lake portage,  isn't there someone there too?    Or is it just portage wheels to get boat across? And if you go at prairie portage, isn't that a border crossing, so customs and all that?   I love Quetico BTW
