Interesting, doesn't this teacher know that meat comes from the grocery store smile

Idaho teacher kills, skins rabbit in class

Published November 14, 2014

Associated Press

BOISE, Idaho – An Idaho biology teacher is facing possible disciplinary action after killing and skinning a rabbit in class to show students where their food comes from.

Nampa School District spokeswoman Allison Westfall says the teacher killed the rabbit in front of 16 students by snapping its neck on Nov. 6 at Columbia High School.

The rabbit was then skinned and cut up in front of the 10th graders.

Westfall says the demonstration isn't part of the biology curriculum.

She says students who didn't want to view the lesson were allowed to leave ahead of time.

The teacher's name hasn't been released.

If the kids were allowed to skip that lesson, I think it's fine. If you forced a kid to watch you off a rabbit, that might be grounds for discipline.

I am pretty sure that lesson was already done on a duck dynasty episode. But not with a rabbit.

One small, but important difference...the duck was already dead.

Breaking a rabbit's neck in front of the class is a bit overkill. The rest is perfectly acceptable for a biology class, IMO.

I don't see to much wrong with it. They punish her then go heat a burger maybe she should of shot the rabbit with a bolt pistol lol

Why? [/quote']

Come on, would Mc Don's have many families there if they killed the cow right before making the burgers! whistle

This was not something that was covered in any class I've taken. I've cut up plenty of already dead animals in biology classes, slit open brain dead frogs, gassed mice with CO2 and cut out their spleens, stuck needles into live rabbit hearts, etc etc. But it was always about how things work, not how to turn animals into food.

BTW all those things were signed off by some sort of Animal Use and Care ethics board. Snapping the neck of a lab mouse isn't even a kosher way of killing mice anymore, even when you call it "cervical dislocation"

I would have fired that teacher within the day for gross stupidity. Just what did she accomplish by killing a small animal in front of some kids? Kids know where meat comes from and they know animals die to provide the meat. There is something sick about killing a live creature in front of a bunch of impressionable young people.

Kids watch enough insensitive behavior every day.

Yeah, they know it comes from the grocery store in neat shiny plastic packages.

Hmmm.

Reminds me of the first duck my daughter watched me choot.

When it came time to clean it, we did just that, and then she says..."Well, Let's look in the head"...So on we went, learning about what's in ducks heads smile

That was several years ago...She's still quite a bit younger than a 10th grader.

I think most of us can agree that killing the rabbit in front of the class was probably overkill. It was obviously not needed to teach her apparent lesson. I think most of us would have the same reaction if our kid came home and said their teacher snapped a rabbits neck in front of the class. I think most of us would have a W T F type reaction, its simply not a normal or rational thing to do in front of a classroom of kids.

While I want my kids to have an appreciation of where our food comes from I also want them to respect animals and to know that killing an animal is not something that should be taken lightly. You need to have respect for the animal and every kill should be done respectfully, ethically, and for a purpose. I'm not sure the teachers actions would support those principles.

As far as firing the teacher, I suspect the school has guidelines and policies governing the use of animals in the classroom. My guess is that snapping a rabbits neck in front of the class would violate those policies making dismissal a rather straight forward action.

Ummm, I would actually guess that the majority do not know this.

Seriously? High school kids not realizing an animal must be killed to provide meat? Even my 8 year old grandson knows this.

Dude, I already trolled that spot, nothing but slimmers!  😄 Glad I saved money by stopping smoking a while ago. It's free most of the summer now! Been calm and yellow out for days! 🤧

Talked to my neighbor is getting ready for a trip via fall lake.    They use small boats with like 10 to 25 hp outboards and portage wheels.   There are two portages to get into pipestone bay, with the second one being over a hill.   From pipestone they can go around to Jackfish? bay,   There is a big sign to warn about where the no motors area is.

On the South End... The walleye and sauger bite continues to be very good with anglers enjoying consistent action.  As we transition into fall, fish are being found at various depths, but 25 - 32 feet of water has been consistent. Jigging continues to pick up as the waters cool.  Water temps this week are down to 64.  Top jig colors this week include gold, orange, chartreuse, and pink.  For some anglers, big numbers caught this week jigging with frozen emerald shiners on the lake.   Some anglers are jigging on or adjacent to structure.  Others are finding schools of walleyes and saugers out over deep mud.  Using sonar to find fish is helpful.     Spinners and trolling crankbaits continue to produce fish as well.  This is a transition time where multiple presentations are working.  As the season progresses, jigging will take over as the top technique.     For those pulling spinners, gold, pink, orange, glow red, or glow white has been successful. Adjust your weights to 2 - 3 ounces to match the depth and speed you are drifting / trolling. Trolling crankbaits is still producing nice walleyes.  Some goto colors are gold, chrome / blue, pink UV firetiger, and chartreuse.     More and more walleyes are showing up along the south shore.  It seems things are gravitating towards fall patterns where good numbers of the fish are both chasing shiners and moving closer to shorelines.  The bite has been excellent and is really shaping up nicely for the fall jig bite both on the lake and in the Rainy River. On the Rainy River... A variety of species continue to be caught on the Rainy River.  Nice current flow is providing fall anglers some optimism for this year's fall shiner and walleye run being a banner year.  Some reports of nice walleyes being caught in the river already this week.   There are reports of shiners in the river all the way up to Birchdale.  Things seem to be setting up nice for a great fall on the river.  Mother Nature will have the final say of course. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with cooling waters.  Anglers anchor up and use a combination of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig with a flat no roll sinker.     Find a hole in the river or simply mark these big fish in an area, anchor up and soak some crawlers! Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the NW Angle remains really good. Fish are being found in many areas.  Structure, neck down areas as well as on the flats.   Some good fish are still holding in the deep mud east and northeast of Little Oak Island in the mud.  Areas around Four Blocks, and north of Garden Island producing fish as well.    As on the south end, jigging, spinners / crawlers and trolling crankbaits are all producing walleyes.   Smallmouth bass, pike and muskies are also being caught, both by unsuspecting walleye anglers and when targeted.  As the waters cool, crappies and jumbo perch are also showing up nicely for anglers.
