ice conditions!

Recommended Posts

Didn't see a thread started but I was out today hunting and from the bit I saw it looked like pelican was locked up I'm guessing last night a lot of lakes froze over. Might be another year of fishing before thanksgiving. Be careful out there

I stopped and got out the truck at the south access on Buffalo. the ice was only a 1/4" thick. touched it with my foot lightly and it broke and sent a big wave under the ice that rippled the ice alittle. also checked Constance and it is capped except for at the access and two other little holes up the shore line on that side do to the geese and swans. I should still be able to make my goal of November 30th on one of the lakes in the area. there is a few others I am checking on a daily basis now too.

I also went to deer lake looking at how the ice formed up below the dam. I wish The DNR guys could net all the small crappies out for stocking. I would think there would enough fish to fill a 30 gallon drum with out water. if they got above the dam it could really help the lake. I was thinking of catch a bunch of the small pike for pickled fish.

Was out there (Edwards) in the morning yesterday. 4" of ice and some tiny 6" walleyes to boot. By far the earliest I've ever been out before. We weren't the first ones either, we followed some tracks that were from the night before. Fished for a couple hours then went and checked some lakes. Found anywhere from 1.5"-3" of ice. Didn't wet a line again. Crossing the fingers this wind don't break up what was looking to be an awesome start to the best season of the year.

Sunday afternoon there was one guy sitting out where the city dock was. The claim is 2 1/2" ice there, kings point don't try, still super thin.

I heard closer to 4" on clearwater. I haven't checked, but I doubt buffalo has that much ice. The only real lake here in Staples (a slough by Annandale standards) had around 5".

This AM the bay by the pay access (on Clearwater) had a portable (hub style) out about 300 yds... you could see open water in the main part of the lake! I don't need to fish that bad.

checked BB and Schmidt BB had 3 1/2 at the shore and 2 1/2 about 50 ft out, Schmidt had 5 inches 50 ft out.

I must of been not too far behind you! I checked Beebe out too yesterday evening and saw your spud marks. I had about 3-3.5in, but I didn't go to your farthest hole. It did look a little shetchier further out. Hopefully the next few nights will add some more ice!

On a downer note, are we really suppose to get 3-6inches of snow Sun/Mon, that would stink!!! Hopefully it just rains.

Pulaski had about 50 ft of ice on the west side. It was able to hold a goose's weight but not a swan. So it'll be a while yet!

Went out on buffalo lake yesterday morning and found about 4 inches of ice 50 yards out from the SE side.

the ice may have thinned a little but I am not too worried. it will start to freeze again by tuesday night and wednesday morning. atleast the snow cover should be knocked down to bare ice again, this will help with freezing. the only thing with bare ice is be sure to be safe on it and use a good set of spikes on your boots.

And on this early ice, also have a set of ice pics around your neck, or down your sleeves.

I was told that somebody dropped a wheeler through the ice on Maple Lake yesterday.

that wouldn't surprise me one bit. I'm surprised no one has dropped anything in buffalo yet.

What I really wanna know is:   How’d get that lattice to curve like that?  Bomb diggity!

Fish Newton lake is great for walleyes. Everyone goes to basswood and forgets about newton. The late fall pike bite in pipestone is amazing and it’s a great time to catch the big walleyes are up there feeding too.

It would cost you 830 bucks to watch every game this NFL season under multiple platforms.   I don't have peacock or espn+ or whatever they want me to have, so I'll just have to relent on being able to watch a few games.  I refuse to cave in to their demands just to watch the Packers play the Eagles in Brazil.  I think last year peacock had the exclusive rights to the Miami/KC playoff game too.  I'm sure that will occur again in January.

Well it's a win, but it wasn't to Purdy with all the turn overs and penalties!

Oop, must be another Vikings game.  So far it's been a Prudy game, Viks!  😁

Another prediction.   Under the cloud of "Woke Inclusion" Just like the Mn state flag and the Mn Twins, the Vikings name will be going away in a few years! Their already making them look like Snow flakes!  We can't have the uniforms of angry Norwegian people!  Sounds funny but. Wait for it! 😒

Just sayen, not all the loyal old fans, can pay for the NFL viewing package!

New frontiers.  Expand the market; make more money.  Despite some PR moments, they’re not in it for charity.   BUT, they might want to take a moment and see how that worked out for NASCAR.  Not that having to buy premium channels to watch races was the only problem but it sure helped kill the fever for a lot of people.

Get ready. Any bets in a few years the average Joe NFL fans aren't going to be able to watch their local teams, unless it's pay for view!  Sounds like their greasing the wheels now.  There are 5 international games this year! ☹️ "The NFL will play a regular season game in Madrid, Spain in 2025, as the NFL prioritizes global growth and expands the International Games to new cities and markets around the world."

I have gone into Basswood from Fall Lake. From Fall the first portage takes you into Newton and that is the easier of the two. The portage from Newton into Pipestone is the one with a hill. It is definitely harder! You also have to be careful when you go down the hill because the boat will pick up speed and can get away from you. Yes, you can get to Jackfish without going into Canada and there are signs letting you know where Canada is.
