rattle wheels and a deaf person

The night bite on Red Lake is so much fun, but I feel bad because my son is deaf and cannot hear the rattle wheels clicking. Does anybody have any cool ideas for our situation? We have tried tying a line to his finger, but that wasn't the best idea for many reasons (thankfully no pike came through).

I would love for him to be able to experience what we all enjoy when the click, click, click of a rattle wheel wakes you up.

Thanks guys

Wonder if you could hook up LED motion activated valve stem lights that they sell for bikes. That way if the wheel turns the LED light turns on?

Maybe they already sell light activated rattle wheels.?

I'm no engineer but if you could rig up a flashing light to a battery and when you hear the clicking you turn the light on and he sees if flashing that would signal him in the same way you and I would by hearing the rattle. If you could rig it up to turn on by itself even better but that's way out of my league to figure out.

Get some sort of easy tripping toggle switch. Position it to where...by attaching something to the rattle reel...would trip it...extending the toggle if needed. Hook the switch into some sort of flashing light...a disco ball would be sweet. Am sure easier said than done, but would think doable. ....could also do the same set up, but find something wireless that vibrates and he could carry that around instead.

Do you have a hole close to or under a bunk? One thing I have done is put a tip up in one of those holes so the flag slaps the bed when it goes off. Even the tiniest of tics can wake you up when you are hoping for it.

For those that are hard sleepers or deaf you can get an alarm clock that has a vibrating pad that tucks under your pillow to wake you up. I would get that vibrating pad and rig up a system to actuate a sensor to trigger that pad to go off when the circuit is tripped.

I fish with a buddy that is deaf (or pretty close to it) when he goes to sleep, and removes his hearing aids, I am soley responsible for the rattle reels... which is kind of nice as I get the fish but 2 yrs ago on REd after the 10-11 time I pulled em up so I could get some sleep.

Last month we met some guys shore fishing that had an electronic sensor on his fishing rods set out that would send a text to his phone if he got a bite... put a cell on vibrate and put it in his pocket or in the pillow. There has got to be technology out there for this. There is an app for everything.

Vibrating massage motor (like ones used in waterbeds or chairs) mounted to the bed he's on. Wired to an alarm trigger like you can buy or make if you are handy. Vibration is more than strong enough to wake a person and is also adjustable.

Two Ideas......look for an artic siren that frabill use to sell to put on tipups. rig it so when the line gets pulled the pin comes out of the artic siren and sounds/flashing lights will go off.

other options is the tip up alarms that will send a message to your phone. rig it up on the rattle wheen and have the phone on vibrate. then he can feel the vibrate and know the rattle wheel is going.

I see a opportunity for some app developer. If you used the alarm clock in the link below and create an app that can connect via Bluetooth. Once the line is pulled out it makes contact and then sends the signal via Bluetooth to the cell phone in the docking station on the alarm clock. That would trigger the shaker under the pillow.

Something that would require a little research and development but there's seems to be an app out there for everything, why not this?

Dude, I already trolled that spot, nothing but slimmers!  😄 Glad I saved money by stopping smoking a while ago. It's free most of the summer now! Been calm and yellow out for days! 🤧

Bet you would enjoy a nice paddle down the Cahulawassee River, too then. 😏

Talked to my neighbor is getting ready for a trip via fall lake.    They use small boats with like 10 to 25 hp outboards and portage wheels.   There are two portages to get into pipestone bay, with the second one being over a hill.   From pipestone they can go around to Jackfish? bay,   There is a big sign to warn about where the no motors area is.

On the South End... The walleye and sauger bite continues to be very good with anglers enjoying consistent action.  As we transition into fall, fish are being found at various depths, but 25 - 32 feet of water has been consistent. Jigging continues to pick up as the waters cool.  Water temps this week are down to 64.  Top jig colors this week include gold, orange, chartreuse, and pink.  For some anglers, big numbers caught this week jigging with frozen emerald shiners on the lake.   Some anglers are jigging on or adjacent to structure.  Others are finding schools of walleyes and saugers out over deep mud.  Using sonar to find fish is helpful.     Spinners and trolling crankbaits continue to produce fish as well.  This is a transition time where multiple presentations are working.  As the season progresses, jigging will take over as the top technique.     For those pulling spinners, gold, pink, orange, glow red, or glow white has been successful. Adjust your weights to 2 - 3 ounces to match the depth and speed you are drifting / trolling. Trolling crankbaits is still producing nice walleyes.  Some goto colors are gold, chrome / blue, pink UV firetiger, and chartreuse.     More and more walleyes are showing up along the south shore.  It seems things are gravitating towards fall patterns where good numbers of the fish are both chasing shiners and moving closer to shorelines.  The bite has been excellent and is really shaping up nicely for the fall jig bite both on the lake and in the Rainy River. On the Rainy River... A variety of species continue to be caught on the Rainy River.  Nice current flow is providing fall anglers some optimism for this year's fall shiner and walleye run being a banner year.  Some reports of nice walleyes being caught in the river already this week.   There are reports of shiners in the river all the way up to Birchdale.  Things seem to be setting up nice for a great fall on the river.  Mother Nature will have the final say of course. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with cooling waters.  Anglers anchor up and use a combination of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig with a flat no roll sinker.     Find a hole in the river or simply mark these big fish in an area, anchor up and soak some crawlers! Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the NW Angle remains really good. Fish are being found in many areas.  Structure, neck down areas as well as on the flats.   Some good fish are still holding in the deep mud east and northeast of Little Oak Island in the mud.  Areas around Four Blocks, and north of Garden Island producing fish as well.    As on the south end, jigging, spinners / crawlers and trolling crankbaits are all producing walleyes.   Smallmouth bass, pike and muskies are also being caught, both by unsuspecting walleye anglers and when targeted.  As the waters cool, crappies and jumbo perch are also showing up nicely for anglers.
