DNR Fish Species Workgroups

Forgive me if this was already posted but I happened to actually read the entire e-mail that I recently got from the DNR and saw that they are looking for the "Average Joe" to be part of a work group that would meet several times a year to discuss fish species management. I know there is always a lot of talk on these forums about the DNR and how they handle their business so I thought I would pass this on so people have the opportunity to give their 2 cents if they so desire. It looks like you can choose which species you wish to be part of. Here is the notice and link for more information.

Deadline nears for those seeking to serve on DNR fish work groups

Volunteers who want to join five citizen-agency work groups that will discuss how the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources manages fish have until Wednesday, Nov. 19, to apply.

There will be individual work groups for bass, catfish, panfish and walleye, and one that will focus on both northern pike and muskellunge.

Each group of 10 to 15 people will include volunteers and DNR staff who meet two to three times per year to discuss new research, population and harvest trends, and fisheries management. Volunteers may apply to one of the five groups and citizens can nominate themselves.

Participants will be selected by the DNR and can serve a term of either two or three years. Meetings average four to six hours including travel time. The groups are advisory and do not make decisions on policy or fish management.

I’ve had the opportunity the be a part of the Catfish group for the past few years. It’s a great experience to be able to work together with the DNR towards things that are important to us as fishermen. I would recommend anyone who posts here about things needing to change or dumb laws you don’t like, or to support habitat improvement and conservation matters, that this is your chance to get involved and have your voice heard.

We were able to get a couple of things changed as a result of our collaboration. (Using catfish baits captured from AIS waters in AIS waters and a closed Flathead season in the winter).
