Any deer reports from the weekend?

Report from my brother was slow overall, a couple nice 8-points and one smaller buck is about it.

I'm heading up Wed. to hunt through the weekend. Looks like it's going to be a little chilly... whistle

I saw more deer in the 5 mile drive to my stand Sunday morning at 5:30 am along the road than I did sitting in my stand all weekend. Granted the wind on Saturday kept them pretty much on the down low, but I would have to say it's about like it was last year. About the only good news is that the bucks are chasing the does pretty good right now.

Saw 1 small buck on Saturday. Others we hunt with got two does. On Sunday, my son and I had a small buck and nice doe by 7:50a. A few others were available too. Deer really seemed to be moving big-time. For us we had a good year. We seldom fill out.

Cool temps are forcing the issue on processing. Doing 'em up tonight.

Hunting by northeast of Frazee was just plain terrible.. Very few seen. Nothing shot. Perfect weather, fresh snow everyday. Very few tracks on 300 acres of private land. By far the worst that I can remember. But we will keep plugging along and hope a few show up in the next few days. If not then I will muzzy and late archery near DL.

I hunt between Barnesville and Pelican Rapids. About a half hour after sunrise on Saturday, I look across the creek and see a big deer trotting along. Maybe one of the biggest deer I've seen in Minnesota. He looks like he's in full rut,...on steroids,... and overweight. His antlers are wider than his butt and about twice as tall as his ears. I watched him follow the creek until he hit another patch of woods, maybe two to three minutes. A few minutes later, I get a call from one of the other guys in our group. He asked if I saw that deer. I told him that, yes, I did see it on the other property. He said, "No, I mean did you see it run right by your stand?" He went on to tell me that he watched it come from the east and run between my pickup and my stand, about 75 yards from me. When they come from the east, they usually follow a draw to my right, not go straight west. Major oops on my part. I think we have four deer for the nine hunters in our party. That was up to Sunday night and there was some shooting that evening, so we may have one more, maybe two. Did see three coyotes on Saturday morning.

Yeah, really close, just looked on google earth and I am about two miles north of you right on 31 about a mile south of Little Toad lake.

My Dad and I ended up filling our tags. I wouldn't give up on that area, a friend of my Dad's, who's land we hunt on, got three nice bucks on Saturday morning and they are hunting almost exactly right in between you and I. So they are out there, the bucks are really chasing the does right now too.

No I won't give up. It is my dads land, I have hunted it for 30 years, have shot a lot of deer out there and have a few on the wall from out there. I will out as much as I can the next 4 days and then if not successful bring out the smokepole in a few weeks. I am really only after a big one still...

Sorry. Just getting a little stir crazy. Have been sitting in my stand since 6:00 am and seeing nothing other than this button buck (he has been hanging around my stand all day) and one doe this am. Anybody else seeing deer?

Saw a deer under my Dad's stand this morning. Problem was Dad was at the Pool Hall in Pelican Rapids at the time.

Had 5 does and fawns in front of me last night but no bucks. Was sitting on an alfalfa field. Just got out to a Tamarac island. 5 minutes after I got here a doe and 2 fawns walked through. Finally seeing deer. Just want a big one. Today will be my last rifle sit.

I hunted 7 of the days and saw many more deer than last year. Problem was pretty much all were does and fawns, mainly fawns. It was good to see all the pairs of fawns running around. If we can get a decent winter next year should be much better.

On the South End... The walleye and sauger bite continues to be very good with anglers enjoying consistent action.  As we transition into fall, fish are being found at various depths, but 25 - 32 feet of water has been consistent. Jigging continues to pick up as the waters cool.  Water temps this week are down to 64.  Top jig colors this week include gold, orange, chartreuse, and pink.  For some anglers, big numbers caught this week jigging with frozen emerald shiners on the lake.   Some anglers are jigging on or adjacent to structure.  Others are finding schools of walleyes and saugers out over deep mud.  Using sonar to find fish is helpful.     Spinners and trolling crankbaits continue to produce fish as well.  This is a transition time where multiple presentations are working.  As the season progresses, jigging will take over as the top technique.     For those pulling spinners, gold, pink, orange, glow red, or glow white has been successful. Adjust your weights to 2 - 3 ounces to match the depth and speed you are drifting / trolling. Trolling crankbaits is still producing nice walleyes.  Some goto colors are gold, chrome / blue, pink UV firetiger, and chartreuse.     More and more walleyes are showing up along the south shore.  It seems things are gravitating towards fall patterns where good numbers of the fish are both chasing shiners and moving closer to shorelines.  The bite has been excellent and is really shaping up nicely for the fall jig bite both on the lake and in the Rainy River. On the Rainy River... A variety of species continue to be caught on the Rainy River.  Nice current flow is providing fall anglers some optimism for this year's fall shiner and walleye run being a banner year.  Some reports of nice walleyes being caught in the river already this week.   There are reports of shiners in the river all the way up to Birchdale.  Things seem to be setting up nice for a great fall on the river.  Mother Nature will have the final say of course. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with cooling waters.  Anglers anchor up and use a combination of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig with a flat no roll sinker.     Find a hole in the river or simply mark these big fish in an area, anchor up and soak some crawlers! Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the NW Angle remains really good. Fish are being found in many areas.  Structure, neck down areas as well as on the flats.   Some good fish are still holding in the deep mud east and northeast of Little Oak Island in the mud.  Areas around Four Blocks, and north of Garden Island producing fish as well.    As on the south end, jigging, spinners / crawlers and trolling crankbaits are all producing walleyes.   Smallmouth bass, pike and muskies are also being caught, both by unsuspecting walleye anglers and when targeted.  As the waters cool, crappies and jumbo perch are also showing up nicely for anglers.

This spring I saw a lot of grouse and even a few broods. I'm hopeful for the upland season. Didn't see a whole lot of mallard ducklings this year but good numbers of wood ducks. I think the Canada geese numbers go up every year.

My uncle and dad said they aren’t seeing any young birds and not many up north. Bummer Hazel is ready and Finn wants some ducks .

Just got back from my annual 3 day fishing trip to my brother's cabin.  My dad, brother, nephew and I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday fishing 4 lakes.(Evergreen,  Grace, Plantaganet and Cass.)  Caught lots of sunfish, crappie,  perch and a couple walleye.  Perch on Cass were 10-12 inches. Crappie were mostly 10 to 11. Some 12's.  Sunfish ran 8-9 inches.  Walleye was tough but managed a 14, 15 and 17. My brother and nephew did better than my dad and I. They have much better quality rods and could feel the bites much better, plus they used gulp vs our live bait mostly. They did better using 3 inch gulp than smaller ones as well. I'm definitely investing in a new quality rod. Plus I need to get more confidence on plastic.  Overall a very good trip.
