Noobie question...Is it worth duck hunting in the afternoon?

Recommended Posts

I know in pheasant hunting the last hour can be really productive. Is there something similar in waterfowl hunting? I'm wondering if it is worth setting up in the afternoon or if I am just wasting my time. I'm unable to get out tomorrow morning, but may have the afternoon available.

I wouldn't waste your time. Unless there is a crazy weather front or snow coming down from Canada, you'll most likely see a lot birds flying after shooting hours. Although the only way to find out is give it a try. Good luck.

It is supposed to get crazy windy late today, into tomorrow. The Red River Valley forecast is calling for 60 mph gusty winds!!! From the north/northwest.

I'm not even sure it would be real safe to hunt in winds that strong?!?! I'd be willing to bet there will be birds moving all day today ahead of this storm.

On almost all days, early morning is the best time period. But there are MANY days that birds will fly periodically throughout the day, while the evening should have generally more birds moving than mid-day. Typically the peak of the evening flight is after shooting light, BUT I've had plenty of good evening hunts where they start milling around pretty good an hour before sunset.

And if there are birds migrating and looking to settle in somewhere overnight, it could be great. If you have time to go and a place to safely hunt, go for it. Gotta hustle to pick up your decoys at sunset though - no fun to be still picking up dekes when it's pitch black.

I've definitely had some good afternoon hunts. Definitely had some skunks too. But I could say the same thing about the morning. The best duck hunting I've had as far as shot opportunities goes was on a weekday afternoon in mid-late season. I'd put more stock in cloudy/rainy/gross vs bluebird sun shine than in morning vs afternoon.

One thing I know for sure is you won't see ducks from the couch.

I used to think the am was the only time worth hunting but last week in North Dakota we consistently had out best hunts from 2pm - 5pm ... Now I still believe that more often than not the am is better, but you can't shoot ducks sitting on the couch, so afternoon/ evening is better than not at all...

Depends on where you're hunting. if you're hunting a harvested field it can be good in both the morning and afternoon. Usually birds will go out to feed early then go back to water to loaf during the day and then back out to the field again in the afternoon to eat again. The best hunt I've had in my life for ducks took place north of Winnipeg in a harvested wheat field that the farmer could't pickup because of rain/flooding. We shot 80 mallards/pintails in about 25 minutes then sat back and watched the show for the next hour before picking up. I actually prefer to field hunt ducks in the afternoon.

The craziest shoot I have had this year was in the afternoon. Birds began hitting the decoy spread at 3:00pm. We held out until 3:30pm before we couldn't stand it any more and fired our first shots.

We were done with a 2man limit and loading decoys at 4:15pm

If your in the right spot, look out.

On the South End... The walleye and sauger bite continues to be very good with anglers enjoying consistent action.  As we transition into fall, fish are being found at various depths, but 25 - 32 feet of water has been consistent. Jigging continues to pick up as the waters cool.  Water temps this week are down to 64.  Top jig colors this week include gold, orange, chartreuse, and pink.  For some anglers, big numbers caught this week jigging with frozen emerald shiners on the lake.   Some anglers are jigging on or adjacent to structure.  Others are finding schools of walleyes and saugers out over deep mud.  Using sonar to find fish is helpful.     Spinners and trolling crankbaits continue to produce fish as well.  This is a transition time where multiple presentations are working.  As the season progresses, jigging will take over as the top technique.     For those pulling spinners, gold, pink, orange, glow red, or glow white has been successful. Adjust your weights to 2 - 3 ounces to match the depth and speed you are drifting / trolling. Trolling crankbaits is still producing nice walleyes.  Some goto colors are gold, chrome / blue, pink UV firetiger, and chartreuse.     More and more walleyes are showing up along the south shore.  It seems things are gravitating towards fall patterns where good numbers of the fish are both chasing shiners and moving closer to shorelines.  The bite has been excellent and is really shaping up nicely for the fall jig bite both on the lake and in the Rainy River. On the Rainy River... A variety of species continue to be caught on the Rainy River.  Nice current flow is providing fall anglers some optimism for this year's fall shiner and walleye run being a banner year.  Some reports of nice walleyes being caught in the river already this week.   There are reports of shiners in the river all the way up to Birchdale.  Things seem to be setting up nice for a great fall on the river.  Mother Nature will have the final say of course. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with cooling waters.  Anglers anchor up and use a combination of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig with a flat no roll sinker.     Find a hole in the river or simply mark these big fish in an area, anchor up and soak some crawlers! Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the NW Angle remains really good. Fish are being found in many areas.  Structure, neck down areas as well as on the flats.   Some good fish are still holding in the deep mud east and northeast of Little Oak Island in the mud.  Areas around Four Blocks, and north of Garden Island producing fish as well.    As on the south end, jigging, spinners / crawlers and trolling crankbaits are all producing walleyes.   Smallmouth bass, pike and muskies are also being caught, both by unsuspecting walleye anglers and when targeted.  As the waters cool, crappies and jumbo perch are also showing up nicely for anglers.

This spring I saw a lot of grouse and even a few broods. I'm hopeful for the upland season. Didn't see a whole lot of mallard ducklings this year but good numbers of wood ducks. I think the Canada geese numbers go up every year.

My uncle and dad said they aren’t seeing any young birds and not many up north. Bummer Hazel is ready and Finn wants some ducks .

Just got back from my annual 3 day fishing trip to my brother's cabin.  My dad, brother, nephew and I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday fishing 4 lakes.(Evergreen,  Grace, Plantaganet and Cass.)  Caught lots of sunfish, crappie,  perch and a couple walleye.  Perch on Cass were 10-12 inches. Crappie were mostly 10 to 11. Some 12's.  Sunfish ran 8-9 inches.  Walleye was tough but managed a 14, 15 and 17. My brother and nephew did better than my dad and I. They have much better quality rods and could feel the bites much better, plus they used gulp vs our live bait mostly. They did better using 3 inch gulp than smaller ones as well. I'm definitely investing in a new quality rod. Plus I need to get more confidence on plastic.  Overall a very good trip.
