Full=auto problem with Hi-Standard .22 handgun

quacksmackMN

Question

I recieved an old semi-auto Hi-Standard .22 handgun from my grandpa a while back and I have been having some issues with it... At first when I would shoot the gun would "double-shoot" or fire two shots when the trigger was pulled once. It happened about one time every magazine. lately the gun will go full-auto and fire off three or more shots when I pull the trigger once. I have thoroughly cleaned the gun many times. I am wondering if it may be a sticky firing pin? any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try a good cleaning if that doesnt work I would be going to a gun smith. I picked up a used ruger 1022 that would do that so I took it apart to clean it and noticed the sear had some rough edges so after filing and cleaning i reassembled. When I went to test fire it would empty the clip with one trigger pull. Not fun when you are not expecting it.

Keep it!!! You've got yourself a fun little handgun smile

That's what I'm thinking. That would rock!!! Just don't let anybody else shoot it without them knowing its "superpower".

I think I may end up just doing that... It would be nice if it was a little more consistent though. As is you never know when its gonna take off!

Im with Frank on this one.. Sounds like a good way to get someone hurt.. I'd bring it to a gunsmith.

Common problems with the hi-standards. They don't have a feed ramp, the magazine has feed lips that need to be at a predetermined angle. You can find these tools to set the angle on e bay. Google "hi standard magazine adjustment tool" and you'll quickly learn some of the downfalls of hi standard mags, replacement mags are hard to come by too as they are out of production. With that being said, I would also advise taking it to a gunsmith just to get it checked out. What model is it?

I jumped the gun with my response. The double firing doesn't have anything to do with the feed lips on the mag. But hey, now you know of that problem now too. I really enjoy shooting my HS Sport King.

That may not be part of the double-fire problem, but I have also had a few issues with it feeding. Very helpful input, I think I'll order one of those adjustment tools. Thanks!

I have no idea about your gunsmithing skills, but unless have some experience and you know what your doing I would get it to a smith for repair so the the gun is safe to use.

      This spring I saw a lot of grouse and even a few broods. I'm hopeful for the upland season. Didn't see a whole lot of mallard ducklings this year but good numbers of wood ducks. I think the Canada geese numbers go up every year.

      My uncle and dad said they aren’t seeing any young birds and not many up north. Bummer Hazel is ready and Finn wants some ducks .

      Just got back from my annual 3 day fishing trip to my brother's cabin.  My dad, brother, nephew and I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday fishing 4 lakes.(Evergreen,  Grace, Plantaganet and Cass.)  Caught lots of sunfish, crappie,  perch and a couple walleye.  Perch on Cass were 10-12 inches. Crappie were mostly 10 to 11. Some 12's.  Sunfish ran 8-9 inches.  Walleye was tough but managed a 14, 15 and 17. My brother and nephew did better than my dad and I. They have much better quality rods and could feel the bites much better, plus they used gulp vs our live bait mostly. They did better using 3 inch gulp than smaller ones as well. I'm definitely investing in a new quality rod. Plus I need to get more confidence on plastic.  Overall a very good trip.

      Fall lake has nobody there and yes you have to use portage wheels to get across. At prairie portage you don't cross the border, so you don't have to go through customs. However right next to prairie portage there is a Canadian customs building if you wanted to enter into Canada. I don't know anything about it other than it is there.

      Grouse season is right around the corner, my Italian 20-gauge SxS sidelock is still available for trade. 25" barrels, ejectors, single selective trigger, great early season grouse thumper, and in excellent condition for a fifty-year-old gun.   Jim

      I was thinking of the fall lake portage,  isn't there someone there too?    Or is it just portage wheels to get boat across? And if you go at prairie portage, isn't that a border crossing, so customs and all that?   I love Quetico BTW
