The Remington 870 of Bows?

Huntin&Fishin

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to get into bow hunting, and I am wondering what is a good cheaper bow that would get the job done. Like the Remington 870 isn't the top end shotgun but it has a great reputation. I know some of you will say save your money and get a top end bow, well I am not looking for a top end bow, just a good one to kill a deer and shoot around with. So any recommendations? Hoping to spend under 500$

Its not about any particular brand, but which one feels the best when you shoot. Your best bet is to go to a pro shop and shoot as many as you can that are in or near your price range. There are a bunch of companies that you can go with for under $500 so you shouldn't have a problem. I personally have a Ross Cardiac and really like it. Other companies you should look at would be Bear, Mission, PSE, among others. Like I said, I recommend shooting a bunch and going with the best feeling/most comfortable option.

Don't be afraid to buy a used bow either.

I can't think of any other peice of hunting equipment that depreciates faster and as much. You can sometimes find a two or three year old top of the line bow for a similar price as a brand new lower end model.

Very true. I bought mine used. Got the entire setup with sights, drop away rest, peep, and quiver for $300. I got mine at a pro shop on consignment.

Couldn't agree more the past 3 bows ive bought I bought used and at a fraction of the cost and they were in almost brand new shape

Funny, I was just thinking that to myself today in my stand. I just spent about 2 grand on my setup last season and if I were to sell it I probably could only get 7-800 for it.

There are quite a bit of decent bows all set up and ready to go for $500 and under to get you into it. If you fall in love with it then you can drop the big dough if you want.

I agree with all the previous comments. But the most important is to try several in your price range, including used equipment of which there is lots out there. The good archery shop with an indoor range should be able to help you in all of the above and explain the differences so you can get a bow that is well tailored to you and most of all, you shoot well and enjoy.

With a $500 budget, I would look at a used bow from any of the big names. Bows are like computers, each year a new model comes out and the old ones drop in value. I am shooting a 10 year old Hoyt that still gets the job done.

Mathews Switchback or Switchback XT is probably one of the best hunting bows ever made. Find a nice used one and you will happy for a long time.

I have switchback XT and love it, haven't thought about changing bows since. It is still considered one of the best bows today.

Check out anything used (or leftover) from 2-3 years ago. The depreciation is incredible. I shoot an Elite Z28 that is 3-4 years old that I as a brand new leftover model for like $450 with a rest and sight. It was an $800 bow (bare) brand new.

I shoot a used Switchback and agree with 96trigger's assessment. Solid bow and I have no desire to "upgrade". You should be able to get a fully equipped used one within your budget.

Not to hijack the thread, but where have you guys had the best luck buying used bows? One poster mentioned a pro shop. Any experience with a pawn shop or hsolist? Some other place?

Look at all the brands they have lower ends bows new and they are great bows nothing wrong with them. Love the Hoyt charger in the price range you are looking . I know of 6 guys who have bought this bow same reason cost and love it. They went and shot the Bowtech ,Matthews ,Hoyts all the lower ends and ended up with the charger. I have shot this bow to and does shoot great but that's all up to the shooter what they like. Check out the missions, Diamonds.

I would personally opt to start by going to a pro shop. Buying a bow is alot like buying golf clubs in that you want to get one that fits correctly. Buying a bow (or golf clubs) that do not fit can cause you to develop poor shooting form habits that are then tough to break.

I would only turn to hsolist, pawn shop, etc. after I shot some bows at a pro shop to determine what size of bow I needed. I would hate to spend the money only to find that I bought something too small/too large.

I have a PSE bow that I really like that wasn't that much money (compared to what some people pay). The bows of today are amazing and you don't need to go crazy to have a good shooting bow. Echo other comments about getting one you like and one that fits you well that's the key.

I would only add, that I personally wouldn't start out with a complicated multiple cam "top of the line" bow even if you can get a reasonably priced used one. There are good single cam bows from all these manufacturers that arent' as finicky. Also get a large brace height for forgiveness as you learn to shoot. These are all things a good pro shop can help you with.

On the South End... The walleye and sauger bite continues to be very good with anglers enjoying consistent action.  As we transition into fall, fish are being found at various depths, but 25 - 32 feet of water has been consistent. Jigging continues to pick up as the waters cool.  Water temps this week are down to 64.  Top jig colors this week include gold, orange, chartreuse, and pink.  For some anglers, big numbers caught this week jigging with frozen emerald shiners on the lake.   Some anglers are jigging on or adjacent to structure.  Others are finding schools of walleyes and saugers out over deep mud.  Using sonar to find fish is helpful.     Spinners and trolling crankbaits continue to produce fish as well.  This is a transition time where multiple presentations are working.  As the season progresses, jigging will take over as the top technique.     For those pulling spinners, gold, pink, orange, glow red, or glow white has been successful. Adjust your weights to 2 - 3 ounces to match the depth and speed you are drifting / trolling. Trolling crankbaits is still producing nice walleyes.  Some goto colors are gold, chrome / blue, pink UV firetiger, and chartreuse.     More and more walleyes are showing up along the south shore.  It seems things are gravitating towards fall patterns where good numbers of the fish are both chasing shiners and moving closer to shorelines.  The bite has been excellent and is really shaping up nicely for the fall jig bite both on the lake and in the Rainy River. On the Rainy River... A variety of species continue to be caught on the Rainy River.  Nice current flow is providing fall anglers some optimism for this year's fall shiner and walleye run being a banner year.  Some reports of nice walleyes being caught in the river already this week.   There are reports of shiners in the river all the way up to Birchdale.  Things seem to be setting up nice for a great fall on the river.  Mother Nature will have the final say of course. Sturgeon fishing is picking up with cooling waters.  Anglers anchor up and use a combination of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig with a flat no roll sinker.     Find a hole in the river or simply mark these big fish in an area, anchor up and soak some crawlers! Up at the NW Angle... Walleye fishing up at the NW Angle remains really good. Fish are being found in many areas.  Structure, neck down areas as well as on the flats.   Some good fish are still holding in the deep mud east and northeast of Little Oak Island in the mud.  Areas around Four Blocks, and north of Garden Island producing fish as well.    As on the south end, jigging, spinners / crawlers and trolling crankbaits are all producing walleyes.   Smallmouth bass, pike and muskies are also being caught, both by unsuspecting walleye anglers and when targeted.  As the waters cool, crappies and jumbo perch are also showing up nicely for anglers.

This spring I saw a lot of grouse and even a few broods. I'm hopeful for the upland season. Didn't see a whole lot of mallard ducklings this year but good numbers of wood ducks. I think the Canada geese numbers go up every year.

My uncle and dad said they aren’t seeing any young birds and not many up north. Bummer Hazel is ready and Finn wants some ducks .

Just got back from my annual 3 day fishing trip to my brother's cabin.  My dad, brother, nephew and I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday fishing 4 lakes.(Evergreen,  Grace, Plantaganet and Cass.)  Caught lots of sunfish, crappie,  perch and a couple walleye.  Perch on Cass were 10-12 inches. Crappie were mostly 10 to 11. Some 12's.  Sunfish ran 8-9 inches.  Walleye was tough but managed a 14, 15 and 17. My brother and nephew did better than my dad and I. They have much better quality rods and could feel the bites much better, plus they used gulp vs our live bait mostly. They did better using 3 inch gulp than smaller ones as well. I'm definitely investing in a new quality rod. Plus I need to get more confidence on plastic.  Overall a very good trip.
