Going to be staying at a cabin at Loon lake lodge about the middle of January. Anyone have any tips for fishing this lake?

Someone else just post about the same question a week or so ago for the same lake and maybe the same month. Do a search.

I can't speak for winter fishing, but if your after lakers, avoid the western 1/3 of the lake. I don't know what the deal is, but I've never caught or marked fish until I get close to the middle of the lake. Gold and/or purple have always been good colors for me. Lake is super deep, so ice conditions might be sketchy pending the weather/snow. With all that being said, I might be on loon for the trout opener weekend.

Its one of the last lakes to freeze over in MN. I'm sure the resort owner can give you the latest ice conditions and other lakes to hit if Loon is a no go.

If your on foot from the lodge the closest areas to fish would be heading West on the South shore. Lake maps are old but can give you a few ideas where to set up. Lake trout are generally small but of coarse there are some bigger trout there.

Curious, if your primary reason for Loon for fishing or some other activity like skiing or snowshoeing?

Thanks guys. Cabin was picked by my wife because it is private and she liked the look of it. My fishing comes second.

I've never stayed there, but from seeing it from the lake's POV, it does look nice and woodsy there. The lake itself is scenic and wild too. However, like surface tension already said, the lakers run fairly small in there. Gunflint Lake is just a couple minutes away, much more size ranges, and a better population overall.
