Idea for a more competitive league

Watching sports center over the lunch hour and this amazing idea popped into my brilliant mind. confused The league should set a maximum number of years players can be on a team. Example say players like Manning, Brady, Brees, and other top notch talent can only play on a team for 4 years and then must sign with a different team. In my opinion it would give the bottom feeders a shot at actually being competitive. It is like the impact a guy like Favre had on our team. It would put an end to the top bidder teams like the Yankees had for years in Baseball. I think it would showcase the true talents of the players and their ability to turn teams around. It would put an end to the is it Brady or Belichick conversations. Let me now what you guys think!

There is a salary cap in the NFL, so there really isn't a "top bidder" situation like there is in baseball.

But I'll play along. However, instead of players having to rotate every 4 years, the coaches should rotate every 4 years. That way fans would have a chance at landing a guy like Belichick, Carrol, Harbaugh or Tomlin (oops) to come in an turn things around.

I went back and looked at the past 20 years of Superbowl winners, I think it is pretty competitive the way it is now. 13 different winners out of 20 years. You need an ownership that is willing to put a winning team together, and a capable front office to put one together. Salary caps, and free agency is what makes teams competitive.

The idea kind of came to me as they were talking about the Browns. It would be cool to see if a guy like Manning could go to a historically [PoorWordUsage] team lead them to the super bowl. Basically what Favre did for us. We became a contender when he showed up. Don't really care for the guy but i have to respect him as a player and what he did for our franchise.

It takes more than one guy to get a team into contender status. We had a SB ready team during that time, all that we lacked was a solid QB. Like Favre said when he showed up, "the pieces are in place".

No way could you ship Manning to the Browns as they are today and expect much more than what they are doing. Maybe he could get them an extra win or two, but he'd be killed by the lack of talent surrounding him, same as if you put him on the Vikes roster today.

You need a lot of SOLID talent to surround a few superstars on a team, as well as good coaching and coaching strategies to make a SB run.

Sorry, but your idea is preposterous.

I think if you put a Hall Of Fame QB on any team that team is automatically better. Your O-line isn't as bad anymore because they know how to change protections, audible, and get rid of the ball.

Your WR's are much better because they know how to read defenses and where to put the ball so your WR's can make plays.

If a guy like Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers was on the Vikings this year I'd bet our record would be much better.

I realize the likely hood of this is pretty ridiculous. What i think a system like this would prove is: is it the players or the coaches that actually make the team a winner. You take the Patriots for instance and they say they win because of the system. It doesn't matter the player. Just plug them into the system. When Belichick was the head coach for the Browns they sucked. You take Fox in Denver. Is Fox a good head coach or is he riding Manning's coat tails? The team sucks without Manning in my opinion. I guess i am just fed up with our mediocre play and looking for a way for the Vikes to become a winning team again. If that means mandating a time line that Aaron Rodgers can be a packer before he comes to the Vikes so be it.

I say give zimmer a couple years and see what happens. The defense is already immensely better than a year ago but the offense just cannot consistently score. Injuries play a role there but our D is much better. Last drive last week looked like the same old vikes but overall they are improved.

Interesting idea but I think it sucks and we are all dumber for having heard it. Lmao. Ala billy Madison

I've always liked Fox as a coach, he was one of the guys I wanted the Vikes to go after.

Their team is pretty good even without Manning, they won the AFC WEST and went into the playoffs with Tebow lol. Obviously Manning makes them light years better though. It doesn't matter what kind of line Manning has his Jersey looks like it just came out of the wash after every game.

YAAAA... OKkkkk....

Pretty Socialist view/thought... So let me see if I follow along with your thoughts comrade... the team owners with the best scouts and GMs who draft/aquire and have great coaches who develop players would only get 4 years of use from their assets? So that some team that is a perennial dog in the league (browns, raiders, vikings) because of the poor performance of their employees (players, coaches, scouts and GMs) would benefit? The owners of these competitve teams have an investment in their product to provide a winning team so they can guarntee profits, this would be pulled from them to help some other losing team, thus bringing diminishing profits for the once competitve team... where is the reward for their risk in developing a team?... Sounds like a stellar plan!!!

Why not say every four years we should rotate our jobs and saleries so we all can get paid like a millionaire on occassion whether we earned it or not!

I know you were being tounge in cheek but sheesh! Have Viking fans fallen that hard that they now want to rely on some other teams good fortune to potentially turn them into a team worth watching? Has our mindset in a free market society gotten so polluted by liberals that we want to propose how long good players can stay with a team? I owned my own company for 17 years. We always had new/good equipment and fantastic well paid employees who performed incredibly. Maybe I should have only been able to own that equipment for 4 years and after it was paid off it could go away to another company that is struggling with poor equipment and their image... along with all of our good employees that we developed...

Maybe we should just hand out a Lombardi trophy to every team, every year and never keep score in a game again too!

The bad teams would still find a way to foul up good players. Bad owners can't help but getting in the way of their teams. After four years, many of these players would be ready for the "big" contracts and would have the potential of sinking the bad teams in terms of salary cap.

Bad teams need to find better GMs and scouting departments to build up the team cores before they start spending money heavily on high level free agents. Maybe you should talk about rotating the GMs and scouting departments? grin

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
