Winter training Methods

I'm possibly going to be picking up a pup within two months. Only real concern I have is it will be November by the time the pup comes home, and generally there wont be much time before the snow hits and we face the six plus months of cold & white.

How much of a detriment to training a hunting dog would this be? I like the idea of starting now, so that by the time next years hunting season rolls around, he'll be a year old and pretty well off in his training.

Tips or tricks for training in the winter time?

What kind of dog is it and what type of hunting do you do??

German Wirehaired Pointer, training for Upland, Waterfowl, small game and maybe Shed hunting too. Would be starting with an 8 week old pup.

I'm a retriever guy so probably not much help, but i do try to train year round, it can be done, I train on lakes, parking lots ( under lights) when it's really cold and nasty I do alot of OB, as long as you are doing something it's better than nothing..

The first thing that comes to my mind is that you can focus on obedience. I've trained all of my dogs myself and with each one learned quit a bit. The first thing I learned with my first do is that I didn't spent enough time on basic obedience. Since then that's my primary focus and has worked well. Many British trainers only work on obedience for the first year, not that that's right or wrong but your dog spends more time just being a dog around the house than out hunting.
