I always figured they were seining Or cast netting., not gill netting.

John 21:6

Quote:
But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5So Jesus said to them, "Children, you do not have any fish, do you?" They answered Him, "No." 6And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch." So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish.…

BigDave2 WHY? With all the negativity from over the years still going today Why should they try to appease the complainers?

That I believe is a large part of the problem,They procured the treaty rights. Some don't like it and they are loud about it, very loud! SO much so on most sites bring up mill lacs ask a question about a bite or bait,They turn into netting [PoorWordUsage] matches! .That creates a negative relationship and they are proud as you and me, Its their right to net and with bad relationships I'm sure many of the natives think why compromise we finally have part of what they took!

Make the treaty null and void UMMM Make the Constitution/Bill o rights null and void I bet the anti gun people would love to have a say in rewriting that document

It sounds like you are upset that you are not getting "your fair share".

Btw, I'll be fishing ML this weekend and looking forward to not keeping one fish. Sounds like fun to me. I wish they would make it catch and release only. laugh

Kyhl, have a dam fun time up there! smile

Hey, come back and give a real "Fish Report" and not add all your feelings of what others are doing or feeling about the lake! wink

I thought this was a Mille Lacs fishing report forum? You know, the one where somebody would say “I caught 10 fish on Saturday in 15 feet using Lunker Plunkers”. You hardly see any guides or tourney fishermen reporting here because the thread is going to get hijacked into a non fishing report comment. Do you guys know that they have a Outdoor discussions, Clean Up and Agendas forum? It is at the bottom and I just went on it asking for a Mille Lacs fishing report, I hope to get a straight answer.

If I ever have a slow day I’m just going to answer every post with the following comments:

Gill netting, slot limit, 1837 treaty, red lake, DNR, casino money, and non native anglers.

One word.........money.

I'm not saying that the bands are obligated to give in and stop netting, I'm just saying that financially speaking it would probably make the most sense.

The weather did not cooperate at all.

Friday we spent some time down in Cove Bay in the rain and hiding from the wind throwing bucktails and stick baits but not follows.

The wind shifted so we launch on the west side for the evening bobber/leech bite. A couple hours on the water and boated 4 small 10" walleyes and a 24".

The Saturday NW wind kept us hiding behind Sherman's point. Two keepers were found, plus a 23", a 17 7/8", a jumbo perch, and a 14" smallie. Had to leave early to avoid the incoming storm and even more wind.

Better? laugh

If I am a band member from Wisconsin, why does it make financial sense for me to not net Mille Lacs?

Prior to the Casinos the state of Minnesota paid the bands not net the lake. Once the casinos open the netting started. Now you have the Minnesota bands not so interested in netting. So I think if the state of Minnesota and the Minnesota bands went together to pay cash to the Wisconsin tribe not to net it makes financial sense to stop the netting.

Once again I do not want to stop the netting all together. I believe once the lake has recovered the bands could net 25,000 lbs so they could carry on their heritage.

It wasn't just the netting that killed Red. Ask anyone who lives there what happened and it was far from the sole reason.

While I don't blame nets for Mille Lacs I sure do for Red. Only 15% of the 2 lakes are open to us so with rod and reel there is NO WAY you could kill the lake. Netting open all year long with no management is what killed it.

I'm a Mille Lacs band member. I don't net. But I do hook and line harvest my quota per day several times a year if I can. Personally Id rather we didn't have other bands netting the lake but they signed several treaties so they overlap on Mille Lacs. Responding to people saying hook and line tribe members fishing. The times I've been out I never see tribe anglers fishing. There are some no doubt. But I really doubt the hook and line worry about harming quota harvest. I've talked to several anglers on the lake asking me about keeping larger fish and I said tribal harvest and they were nothing but nice and joking. Some radicals on this site don't speak for all I've found wink.

Agreed!!

I love talking fishing and hunting with anyone and have had nothing but positive and interesting experiences when chatting with Native Americans.

kgpcr4, your example of Red is a very good one, not sure how it doesn't follow on Mille Lacs? confused

Allocation of resources:Take the percentage of Netters per total popultion, take the percentage of hook and liners per total popultion and allocate the resources respectively.c63

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
