GPS Collar ??

MuleShack

Recommended Posts

I have 2 sets of Dogtra Ecollars - The 2502 T&B and the 2302NCP obviously both 2 dog systems for my 2 GSP's.

The 2302 is used around the yard and at the game farms, and the 2502 T&B is used in the field to locate the dogs being they range and in the cattails so I can know where they are. The buttons on the 2502 control are not consistent for some reason where the beeper doesn't go off when pressed regularly.

So was looking at getting a GPS collar to replace the T&B collar for the field and was looking at Garmin. They have a straight GPS collar that seems like the cats meow but it is only GPS, so I would need to have 2 collars on the dog. Is that decent for the dog to carry 2 collars?

Garmin has another 2 dog collar out with the GPS and the Tritronics Ecollar combined. This seems like it would be the way to go...

Any other good GPS - Ecollar combinations out there?

I have the dogtra 2502 t&b collar and i also have the garmin astro tracking collor and i use them both when i am out hunting. The garmin is the cats meow! Its well worth the investment. I also use my garmin with my buddies coyote hunting dogs and we can track the dogs up to 9 miles away. you wont be disappointed.

I know several guys with the Alpha, and it is definitely the best out there IME (the only one real combo competition being the Sportdog).

One friend has the SportDog, it's a nice unit too, but doesn't have maps, which is incredibly helpful when running hounds. But for a trash free bird dog, it shouldn't be a deal breaker either.

If you can swing the Alpha, go for it smile

Keep in mind no matter what brand or type you go with, they all can and do have problems. I've never heard of anything being bulletproof.

As for running two collars, I do it all the time on my beagles (Astro and Sportdog 3200 hound Hunter)

If they don't have any issues with both, your dog certainly will not either.

The buttons on the 2502 control are not consistent for some reason where the beeper doesn't go off when pressed regularly.

Can you elaborate on this? On mine I don't have this issue but I have found that sometimes if you have the hand remote currently set to beep the orange collar and you want to switch it to the green collar and manually beep it there may be a very small lag after it is switched on the hand remote but after that it works fine.

I could see the advantages of GPS collars for coon dogs etc, but I am not sure I see it being practical for upland.

Its not just a delay, its like worn out or loose connections on the beeper bitton.

Sometimes it works fine, other times you have to grind on it to get a tone.

I use these on our dogs in the yard also on acreage so I can locate quickly if they are out of sight. That also is where a gps collar would be useful.

have you tried contacting dogtra? I have had good luck with them standing behind or servicing their products. I havent had any defects, but I did have one fall off the dog in the kennel and that collar and beeper became a very expensive chew toy and they got it back up and running in no time. Sure beat buying a new collar.

Sending it in was always on the agenda, but never got around to it.

Still debating whether to sell the T&B (after getting it fixed) and get the GPS & Ecollar combo from Garmin or just get the GPS collar and add it to the 2302 for the correction / recall ability.

Does Dogtra need a RMA before sending it in or do you just mail it off and see what they charge ya?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
