Favorite stream/river to fly fish for trout in mn

What is your favorite stream to fly fish for trout in southern mn ( Dakota county on down)?

Root River by Forestville SP, Hay, Rush, and Gribben in that order back in the day when I fly fished.

Is trout brook any good?

Well, I don't know. Depends on what you mean when you ask "is brook trout any good?" Any good for what?

They are beautiful fish, a member of the char family and generally fairly small in MN but there are places where you can catch some pretty good sized brookies.

They are pretty easy to fool with a fly, especially smallish dry flies but they are often fished with big streamers dragged behind a row boat; but not in Minnesota that I'm aware of.

You will find some delicate little rascals in SE MN. They prefer cold clean water and therefore are found at the headwaters of smaller creeks.

Are they any good to eat? Yes, my wife and I used to eat lots of them many years ago but those were nice little fish, abundant where we caught them, and from absolutely clear clean water.

hahaha, that's how I interpreted the question too, but when I read it again I realized they were askin if trout brook is any good...

Brookies are awesome fish.

Egads! That's the kind of thing that will make an old man outa ya. I don't know nuffin 'bout no Trout Brook.

But I know about a Trout Book ifn' ya need any help there.

Trout Brook is aight if you are bringing some kids or something. None of the trout in there get very big most of the Brookies will be around 6 inches with the occasional 8-9 incher. You can peek over the banks in the deeper pools and see 100's of the little guys, if you spook them none of them will bite.

There's some Browns in there also but again they don't get very big, I'm sure there are the rare ones that swim up from the Cannon River but really Trout Brook doesn't support bigger fish. Normally it is super shallow and when a beaver makes a dam and finally makes a nice pool DNR takes it out.

There are much better streams in SE MN unless your lookin for a spot to take the kids and mess around a bit. If you stay hidden you can hammer them 6 inchers all day.

Trout are over rated. There are bigger, badder fish available in much closer places to you.
