walleye walleye walleye walleye walleye walleye

One can look at it many different way but it all comes down to the dollar and walleyes in Mn bring in the dollars

They should dump concrete in lakes without walleye to make more trailer parking for the walleye lakes.

The ice left my bay on the chain today....I thought "what the hell". I'll cast a few from shore...10 cats later, in twenty minutes....I think we can raise the limit...these things are EVERYWHERE!

What were u using? 10 fish in 20 mins .. share that knowledge and maybe we can remove a few out of there. I love a good fish fry

Just a question on the initial stocking of them. I was once told the reason for stocking was to try and reduce the bullhead population. With saying that we used to catch tons of yellow bellys but I don't remember the last time I have caught one?? Not that I am complaining but I wonder if there is truth to this theory??

That was part of the reason. They wanted to provide additional angling options for the locals grin and did a great job if you ask me....

Ha ha. I think in the last couple years I have I have caught them on every thing I have thrown.any where from a scum frog to trolling a big gold Dr spoon @ 3 mph. Seems like the meal ticket for them is a black and blue swim jig on deeper docks. Thinking a tournament of two man teams biggest bag of twenty no release with a catfish feed afterwords sounds like a good place to start.

Caught 3 cats in 4 casts today.

Must have been fouled or snagged some debris on the only cast you didnt catch one. ..?.... grin

  • 2 weeks later...

How big are the majority of the cats? Thinking of fishing the chain for cats. Never been on open water, this winter was first time on ice checking to see if anyone was catching cats, nothing going. Thinking of trying crawlers on a rig or maybe a cut bait of some type.

Jim, most of the ones you will catch are in the 15-18in range. There are bigger fish in the system....and you will get one from time to time.

Crawlers are always good as are live fat heads, cut sucker or chubs are my go-to most of the time though.

Jim, was out on the chain a couple weeks ago trying to get some crappies, but with the cooler water temps switched over to catfish. I brought crawlers and dip bait. First time using dip bait and didn't have no faith in it. Started with crawlers and wanted to give the dip bait a try even though its the raunchiest stuff I have ever smelled and I couldn't believe how productive it was. you gotta use a rig that consists of a vinyl tube about 3 inches with holes in it and a treble hook, I got the peanut butter jar where you drop it in and use a stick to push the dip bait into the tube. They also sell the stuff in a tube like toothpaste and you can just squeeze it into the rig, supposed to be less messy but you gotta hold the tube in order to get it in there. Got it at fleet farm, cant remember the name but I remember it had a skunk on it, lol. They sell a couple different scents/flavors , I went with liver. Location was by the 22 bridge cedar island side on the edge of the current. Im guessing there will be boats all around the hwy 22 bridge for opener.

Ya, my first experience with stink bait was down in a Saint Louis bait shop, I asked about it and the lady behind the counter took the lid off the jar and started to play with it in hand. I couldn't believe how much it smelled, but I think it smells so much you would just need to have open in your boat to draw in the cats. smile

Jr. and I often played a rather fun game of what in the fridge would work: hot dogs, bacon, cooked breakfast sausage, pizza rolls, chicken nuggets, hard boiled eggs, and various dough and condiment concoctions(those were his favorite) ........and all have caught fish.......well, some of his dough experiments were not the best smile Would still give the nod to cut bait though wink

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
