Arrived late morning on 12/28 and fished half day with Riverbend. We were in 27' and found the bite somewhat slow. Only managed to put 8 keepers in the bucket. Suager ran 14-16 and one 16 inch eye. We had a lot of lookers on the Vex, but they were real picky and would chase it and not bite. The fish we did get (along with several throwbacks) came on gold Buckshot rattle, pink and white Angel Eye jr and plain glow white hook. Shiners outfished the fatheads.
Monday turned out to be much better with a total of 30 eyes and Saug mixed and three jumbo perch. Again the same lures produced. The fish on Monday would chase the jig and slam it.
Tuesday, fished morning only and kept 6 sauger, 2 eyes and 2 jumbo perch. Gold Kazmaster, Buckshot rattle, and pink/white Angel jr worked along with the shiners.
Monday and Tuesday we were deeper in 29' of water compared with Sunday at 27'. The cold weather Sunday night and Monday should help put some more ice on the lake. Large trucks and cars were pretty much driving all over. It was rough in spots because of the big thaw on Sunday.
We were happy to meet up with New Yankee, Kelly and their friend from Sioux Falls. Hope you guys had a safe trip home and hope to see you again later this year.
As New Yankee said on the way in Tuesday, bad day on the ice is still better than a good day at the office.
Good luck to all, hope some of this info might be helpful. One thing I did notice which has been posted in the past weeks is that the Sauger are definitley running larger with an awful lot in the 14-16" range. Have a Happy New Year everybody. Bill

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
