are there any fish in lower red? whats the deal?

Posted

Is this a joke?

There's fish in it but lower and half of upper are reservation waters you have to be native american or live on the rez I think you can fish it if you have a native guide

You can fish other smaller waters within the reservation with a native guide but not lower red or the tribes portion of upper red. Unless you don't care if you lose all your fishing stuff.

You have to be an enrolled Band member to fish the Reservation waters of URL or LRL. Even if you are married to a Band member but not an enrolled Band member you can not fish on the Reservation waters of URL or LRL. You can fish the smaller lakes on the Red Lake Reservation with a Guide that is an enrolled Member.

Dang ! Is the fishing that good? Or is there only rumors of the fishing .. whistle

Then its official. There is no reason for me to ever get married.

No not rumors. The lower lake fishes way different. Way more structure and varying depths. My bro in law is fishing on the far east side of the lower lake near battle river and there are big sand bars of there. He is set up in 12 ft just off of one of these dunes and is hammering them. He kept fifty out of there on Thursday.

I fished one of the little lakes for trout on Saturday and the bite was slow. We struggle to get hooked fish on the ice. The bite was light. If we weren't patient we missed. I kept two small rainbows and one brown. I put back three larger rainbows, like four pounders. And I lost twice that many at the hole.

Zach, sorry to burst your bubble but individual band members can't net. The average Joe down there does it by hook and line! There is a reason the fishery has a 100 fish limit, because 100 fish days happen down there.

Posted

The limit is 100 Walleye? Wow if that is true it seems like it is a bit high....Even if it is hook and line...

Posted

Their personal limit is 10 a day. But if they are commercial fishing they are allowed up to a hundred a day to be turned in to the fishery association. They are paying $2 a pound in the round.

Imagine the money that could be made if they opened up a resort(s) and a big campground on lower red, and possibly the western end of upper red. Oh the possibilities.

Compare the number of anglers on an average day on the Reservation side to the non-reservation side and the number of fish coming off of the non-res side is significantly higher I would venture to say... I drive by the Battle River and Blackduck River areas on a daily basis going to and from work, and at most you will see 20-30 rigs on the far east side of lower red, and a handful along the south side of the main point between the upper and lower lake.

I agree. They could print money up there from all the fisherman. However I think they would rather keep it to members only and keep their tradition alive!

I've been saying this for years! Miles and miles of sugar sand beaches, gorgeous scenery, and absolutely stellar fishing. Southwest corner of Lower Red Lake could be home to a gold mine of a resort!

I'd wager it would be difficult to find a vacancy pretty much all year round!

A combined year round resort/gaming casino literally would be a GOLD MINE for the Red Lake Band.

You got it SAM.

A great marina,Bar,Hotel/casino and limit it to fifty boats and 100 rooms and a couple of resturants. Oh yea a bait shop right there too. 6 fish limit and bada bing!

I think they could honestly care less and who can blame them. If you had a piece of heaven like that would you trade it for an extra few bucks?? I sure wouldn't. Its not always about money.

I sure hope they do not do anything with more casinos up there and hotels. I'm greedy and love fishing and hunting and no one around when we hunt up there.

If Tribes could care less about a few extra bucks.... we wouldn't have tribal casinos on so many reservations in MN.

There has always been a group of people from Red Lake that has talked about opening the lake up to some sort of tourism but I think there are far too many that consider the lake as theirs. It's kind like there is a voice of reason that permeates everything. Red Lake is a unique situation. They refused allotment and hold their lands communally. They are steadfastly proud of this and part of the whole make up of what being a Red Laker is.

Although it would be nice to have access to Lower Red, it's a dang good thing that 1/2 of Upper is available smile

Cant blame them for not selling out though.

Heck, I get confused as to where to fish on the 18% of URL I can access. If you give me another 82% of upper and all of lower red to fish I'd just drive around tearing my hair out! I'd need a bigger boat and a 100 gallon fuel tank.

18 %

We have 40% of Upper Red. We can access 48,000 acres of 120,000 acres comprising the upper lake.

Good Luck!

Ken

I was questioning that number too. confused

Posted

I can see it now they open up the lower parts hotels resorts etc, the lake gets fished our and we blame them for netting laugh

Posted

Im guessing that 18% is the total amount of the lake white man can fish when you combine upper and lower. Probably where that number came from.

Posted

Of course it must be, but the comment he was answering was about being able to fish half of upper Red and the one following his was about being able to fish 18% of URL... just clarifying we have 40% of Upper Red.

Good Luck!

Ken
