first time on Pelican this Saturday, I was sort of suprised how as the day got later the bite stopped and before sunset it was a mass exodus off the lake. is that normally how it works out there, really just a daytime bite?

That's pretty much how it has gone for me this year which is nice because on a lot of lakes a good day bite can be hard to find.

My thoughts are that it quits in the evening because of the low water clarity. Especially spots in the 7-9ft depths. That being said, I have found areas where they keep and even start biting in the evening. These are deeper areas, 12ft+, that have clearer water. These spots don't have the best daytime bite. Surprisingly this year, I have found some areas where I could see my jig down to about 5ft or so! For me I have also found that they bite better on Sunny days than cloudy days out there.

Good luck fishing out there.

I don't have lots of crappie experience on pelican, but I caught about 15 after dark until midnight in 11'. Guys I was with were doing fine in 8' too. Sunfish were also biting after dark.

Ive never had good luck out there after high noon. Morning is great in early ice...now it seems like a waste of time. Bring on ice out crappie!!

Gotta agree with 20lb and Ruddy on their posts. I did quite well one evening after dark fishing in the middle section just north of crappie city. I was getting crappies and sunfish after dark. One nice 10"er came on a slender spoon. Got all three hooks. Man was that a pain to get off!

Others I know have done well after dark as well including sunnies as mentioned above.

are there cabins on this lake? once its drained and turned into waterfowl habitat i would assume those property values would plummet

There are no cabins on this lake that I know of. Only a few houses that would be considered to have say a lake lot. Mostly undeveloped shoreline and bordered by Farms and DNR land.
