Denied daily road pass

Did anyone else get denied a daily road pass this last weekend? After getting skunked at Garrison bay and having breakfast at McD's. Stopped by 4 places on the east side of the lake and got denied access to all 4, I finally got on at Liberty Beach. I guess they were trying to keep daily goers off the road for their houses. Must the a bad ice making year! 1 red mark from 6am-6pm, punched holes and fished like crazy...

Sunset walleye PB through the ice, well worth it!full-36836-41385-walleye.jpg

I know there is some bad ice. Did you have a perm with you? Alot of resorts are only allowing certain sized vehicles and only are allowing there seasonal guys to put there houses out so the roads don't go bad from a ton of traffic. Resorts have had to work around the clock this year plowing to allow there roads to at least be drivable due to the massive amount of slush.

no we only had a portable with us in a small suv. we were just trying to stay on the plowed roads park and walk on foot from there. there were a lot of folks with their trucks on ice in their permys. Maybe they didnt want traffic b/c they were pulling out houses? there is a ton of slush though, kudos to the resorts for the plowed roads!

They dont want the traffic because once they let everyone on alot of their roads get ruined by guys speeding allover which breaks up the road, they wanted to get the roads open to their fish house customers to get out and use their permanents as those people pay alot more then 10$ for the year to fish and store their houses.Seems like a popular resort on the east side allways opens their roads to early the past few years to the general public and the road gets ruined and is closed more then open the remainder of the season.Give it some time and they should be open for all to enjoy, just keep it slow.Very nice fish, congrats.

We caught 2 yearling walleye's. A lot of small marks, barely can read them on the flasher. My spoon mark was bigger than the fish that I was marking. I'm guessing perch. Looks to be a bad year of ice, already mid-January and they are just getting some houses out.

Even better was the release. She was ready to go feed again! [video:youtube]http://youtu.be/76eL5Q36gug

I had the same problem and ended up buying a year pass to get on the lake. They plowed us a spot to park the house 100 ft off the road to keep the road dry. There was 14" to 15" of clear ice and a ton of snow. Flooding around the house was an issue. At this point the ice is none too thick.

We had thousands of four inch perch on the camera all day and the walters showed up after dark.

Moe-V:

I have a seasonal pass at a resort on the east side. They only let out people with a season pass this weekend because the road system is not as large as usual and there is not a lot of room. The resort wanted to give seasonal pass customers a chance to get out and get a spot they want for the year. They said if they let everyone out it would be too crowded and they don't want people driving off road. The resort is opening up the roads to everyone this week and they are going to expand the road system.

If you go to Mille Lacs this weekend, you should have an easier time driving on at the various resorts. We found 16 to 24 inches of ice on the east side. Walleyes were biting in the morning from about 7:00 to 9:00 and again for about an hour or two around sunset. Daytime bite was difficult, but not impossible. Water clarity is unbelievable. We were marking fish and then sight fishing them.

Negative on the snow melt. Received about 2 more inches last night. With the predicted winds today, there will be some drifting.

I got some pretty heavy rain on sun. morning that had to help a bit. With this wind and 2 inches you will have some monster drifts today!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
