Going out of SE side resort in rented house, suggestions on presentation and preferred bait so we are prepared for this weekend.

Set line with a smaller plain white hook with a shiner, lindy rattling flyer with minnow head, all I ever use up there.

Many thanks!

My preferred set up is a glass of whiskey, pizza, grumpy old men on dvd, and a medium jig with a rainbow or shiner on the rattle reels, occasionally tossing in the game of cribbage or rummy! Of course there will be a nice nap! Love mille lacs fishing!

Shiners have treated me well fishing the hard water

Hope this warm front triggers a hot bite - thanks for the replies all.

When I was up last weekend the pike hit the shiners and the one walleye I had hit was on a sucker, im not sure why its backwards but sometimes you go up there and they switch lol. Usually my best lure up there is a florescent green buckshot (Bigger one) and instead of a treble put a bigger hook and add a stinger hook, another close second is any colored lindy flyer with a treb.

How much snow on top of the ice?

Get into anything worthwhile? I'm heading up next weekend, so I'm pretty curious how the conditions and fishing are.

STAY HOME! Save the time, money and effort and fish around home. Friday from 2p - Sunday at 10a with 5 guys in our party we DIDN'T EVEN MARK A FISH and everyone we talked to had the very same experience. We moved around, stayed put, changed presentations, had cameras down most of the time...NOTHING! I'm sorry but this lake is dead...

Which side were you fishing?

Posted

Dub- did you have a handful of tip ups out with a mix of shiners and suckers? Unfort, we have caught 80%+ of our fish on tip ups and deadsticks the last couple years even though we also always jig and hole hopping outside whenever possible.

Anybody else finding similar results?

Fished the East side and really we threw everything we had at them! Dead sticks, rattle reels, tip ups, plain hooks, jigging raps, spoons, flyers, shiners, fat heads, rainbows, larva, waxies...moved in ports, some stayed put in perm. Very discouraging, I won't go back. Good luck to you all that have more experience on the lake.

Didn't even mark perch? The little ones are supposedly everywhere... I don't have high hopes of catching many fish, I will be happy with one nice walleye per overnight trip. Might try some area lakes up there during the day since it sounds like the day (walleye) bite is practically non-existent.

There are fish to be had. It is not like 07' when the perch were everywhere and the bite was terrible. It will be slow with most eyes caught at night. We got 3 last weekend in our party, all over 25". Reports of skunks will be common but people will get fish. We got a bonus 40" pike too, they have been on a rampage this year!

Bummer dubs, I'm going up next thurs to the red door and will report back. Anybody been up on the north side yet?

Posted

Fished North side Saturday. Caught 3 lost 2 and 1 bigger mark did not bite.In the past I would say the 2 fish I lost were 99% walleye until the northern caught at 5pm. Dang thing went straight down and sat there for half hour scaring everything else away. Have caught only 3 eyes before but the fact that I did not mark many is what has changed for me.
