Made it out to try an old favorite, out of the way, panfish lake yesterday before the high pressure came in. I am starting to think that crappies feel the effects of high pressure even more than walleyes. When a weather system comes in... it puts so much pressure on their stomachs that they feel full and have to be worked very methodically to even elicit the slightest strikes. Before the front is one of my favorite times to chase SLABS! We started drilling on the base of a break line and eventually connected in 26'. This particular lake was small so we simply kept drilling until the screen on the Vexilar was lit up like a Christmas tree. After about an hour, action slowed so we drilled a series of holes in the immediate area and were able to connect again in fifteen holes or so. The highlight of the day was releasing this 14.25" slab to pass on those big fish genetics. The hot bait was the Epoxie Drop from Clam Pro Tackle and allowed us to get back down to the fish quick. Happy New Year all and tight lines.

How much snow was out there?

Nice report. Especially the part about how when the fish moved, you moved, and it took maybe 15 holes to find them.

There was a post on a different thread where a guy said "to all you that drill lots of holes -- why not just find a lake that has better fishing". A response that I particularly liked was the guy that said "when the fish move, would you rather just sit there and wait for them to come back, or go find them".

When I was a kid, my dad would take me out and we'd sit out somewhere in our house and wait for the fish to move through occasionally. We didn't have sonars, so you'd just set lines at various depths and when you got one crappie, you knew the school was back. Jig all the lines, and get a few more before the fish move on. Sure, we caught fish, but nothing like we get today with faster/better augers to drill more holes, nice sonars to tell us when to move and when to stay put, portable shelters, and better cold-weather gear to keep us mobile.

Thanks all! Aanderud, yes with these basin crappies missing by 10' is like missing by a mile. Lots of holes are needed to keep on the roaming schools and produce these large specimans. We will have to go shred some ice together sometime. About 8" of snow on this lake Mn Cat Guy.

My son got paid back for a good deed he did several years ago. He found a couple of expensive items at a boat ramp and called me asking what he should do.   I told him to bring them home because I was afraid if someone else found them, they might keep them. It was winter and nobody was around. This was when Facebook wasn't really popular yet, I was on several sites like this. First thing we did was make a big sign and posted it at the boat launch, then I posted it on all the forums I was on. Long story short, we never found the owner, but we sure tried. I know to this day, if either one of us found something, we'd do our best to get it back to the rightful owner.

Yes, for sure.     A few years back, and unbeknownst to me, a piece of trim came off my sled while traveling over the lake.  A fellow sledder and complete stranger found the piece and followed my tracks all the way back to my cabin to return the lost item.  Couldn't thank him enough.  His kindness will never be forgotten and is something to which I aspire.

We got the auger back! The person who found it didn't want me to mention his name, we can't thank him enough! Still good, honest people around. He called Spring Bay Resort and asked if they heard of anyone losing an auger and they sent him a screenshot of my post. So, thanks to Dayis and Steve at Spring Bay Resort for that! Thanks again everyone for getting the auger back to us!

Who’s been out? I got hit with the flu and am still recovering.

That's what they're going to do. I always read these posts and wondered how people could lose or forget stuff, well it happens!

Dang….  I know it’s your son, so kinda different, but I’d be expecting a replacement from those who lost it.  The group could each put in and wouldn’t hit one or another too bad.   But that’s just an old man’s thoughts….💭    Good luck.

So my son and buddies were out this morning fishing between Wakemup and H.O.L. Bays (probably between Metza's pt and Schmidt Island), so they had to cross the snowmobile trail to The Landing. Well,  MY Strikemaster 24 volt auger fell off the back of my sled.  They didn't realize it until they got back. If anyone found it, would be nice to get back...please and thank you. Good news is they had the battery in their pocket..... Dip $hits😡
