Took new wheel house up to red last night for its first trip. On the way up with the snow covered roads and cooler temps my propane regulator froze up had to take it off and thaw before heater would light. Wondering what other people do to try to prevent this from happening.

Do you have a cover for your tanks? We just got back from Red and didn't have any problems and the coldest morning was -41 we had the plastic tank covers

Yes I have yo plastic one that covers both tanks. I had it on. I was hoping that it would have helped

I have had the issue several times. Usually just a pan of hot water poured over the regulator will take care of the problem. I have heard that a little isopropal alcohol can be poured into the end of the line then attach to the tank. I have not tried that remedy so no guarantees.

Has any body tried using hand warmer on your reg. Wrap it with ace bandage I think propane stop boiling at 44below goes back to a liquid .propane works on vapor

I bet last night a couple hand warmers would have probably worked. Think I will put them on the fish house need list.

i had the same issue. took hot water to it and it worked, but then another 2-3 days later froze up. got a spare regulator and put that on and had no issues.

i also have a 4 foot hose i have inside the house that i bring the tank in when its this cold because propane can't handle these temps

i allso use hand warmers tied with a rag around the regulator. i usually put them on before i go to bed in these extreme temps.. works great.. nothing is worse than waking up in the middle of the night cold having to get lp flowing again!

The thing that works for me is a magnetic block heater stuck to the side of my propane tank.Since I have been doing this my 30lb tanks empty almost completely in 30 below temps (and 0 regulator freeze ups). They only take 200 watts, that is like 2 light bulbs extra on the generator.

I LIKE THAT IDEA

Thanks for all the info. I now have a few tricks to try when it happens again.

+2, I think that's the best idea I've heard yet for this problem.

I like the idea as well. But something about it just doesn't feel safe to me about applying heat to a propane tank.

If you have money to burn you could get a Powerblanket Gas Cylinder Warmer. They are spendy.

Running your tank inside is asking for trouble if that's what you meant.
