There was a question on keeping walleye, sauger, saugeye, and what they would count as.

I had a conversation with Co. 1st LT Pat Znajda tonight. A Sauger/Saugeye can count as a Sauger/Saugeye IF THE FISH IS KEPT IN THE WHOLE.

If you clean/fillet with a patch of skin on the fish be it a Walleye, Sauger ,Saugeye it WILL count as a walleye.

Leave the Sauger/Saugeye whole and it counts as a sauger.

Lt Znajda also stated that a Saugeye on the south part of Lake of the Woods is not common.

This ruling is for Lake of the Woods, it may be similar or completely different on other body's of water or rivers.

Sauger has NO dark area at the base of the dorsal fin and spots on the dorsal fin.

The saugeye has a rounder tip on the tail and of course tip is white and has a dark area at the base of the dorsal fin and some spots on the dorsal. The sauger has NO dark area at the base of the dorsal fin and spots on the dorsal fin and is more pointed on the tail and of course we all know what a walleye looks like or aleast we should.

As I looked at a picture of a Saugeye it has traits of both a sauger and a walleye.

I am not sure I could pick out a Saugeye.

You hear all kinds of things about Saugeyes. I had a DNR fish counter tell me about all the Saugeyes people were catching and how they needed to be careful because they would count as Walleyes in the limits. Then I had a CO tell me you would probably never catch a Saugeye in LOW because they were so rare.

I like what you said about handling the fish. Treat it like a Sauger and it will be a Sauger (leave it whole for transport) Filet it out and it becomes a Walleye. It is pretty simple after all

If you fillet it out, keep the a piece of the dorsal on the fillet and you can identify it as a sauger then you don't need to keep it whole. Not much more hate than trying to clean frozen whole fish.

LOL Chaws,

I was just getting good at removing all the bones, now I have to try to leave a few strategic ones, This may turn out poorly.

Chaws, unless the regs have changed, saugers need to be kept whole for transport or they count as walleye, unless a fish packer has packaged them.

Yes Saugers need to have the head, dorsal fin, tail all intact. You might just as well leave them whole until you get home ( I also dont like cleaning frozen fish)
