HSO Cool Cats 2014***Cancelled***

Host: Borch

When is the event

Sat March 1st 2014 7:30 am(Date change due to poor travel conditions).

What will we be catching?

Channel Catfish with an occasional Walleye,Crappie and Rock Bass mixed in. Cat fishing through the ice has become very popular and the Horseshoe chain has become the place to be to do it.

Where is the event?

Cool Cats will be on the Horseshoe Chain of Lakes located near Richmond/Cold Spring MN. Roughly 1.5 hrs Northwest of the Twin Cites. From 94 take 23 west to Richmond and then take 22 south to the lake.

We will be fishing the Methane or "Meth" hole. There are two popular points of access. The best one to use for vehicles is the winter access. Please monitor this thread closer to the event to confirm current ice conditions.

What should I bring?

First and foremost, a big smile, because you will be using it a lot smile

Typically we use basic walleye gear for catching the cats. We will set up one pole with an Venom bobber or equivalent and a glow red teardrop with the other pole rigged with a jigging spoon/minnow head. Lindy 1/16 oz Rattlin Flyer in glow red is favorite among the catters.

A spring bobber has proven to be helpful for the light bite days.

Click Chain Cat Report & Techniques for current reports and techniques.

Also as in years past, we will be having a potluck at noon, so bring along a favorite food item to share. Hopefully we can work out frying up some catfish as well.

Bring along the whole family and stay for a couple hours or stay all day.

We will get a bunch of holes punched for those that don't have an auger. If you need some help getting set up just ask.

Hope to see you all there!

I am going to be there. Gonna try and get the wife out as well. Be warned she rarely fishes but when she does she always catches the biggest fish..

Should be a great time. Seems like someone in the group always gets on fish and then it's game on!

It's always fun to spent time face to face with some of the great folks who spend time connecting on HSO.

I'll try to bring some friends, family and I up to have fun. Never caught a cat through the ice, and I'd like to give it a go.

I think I'll finally be able to make it this year!

But...do you think there will be enough ice to drive on by then?!?!? smile

Can't miss this one. If you need anything Borch let me know. If you would like for me to bring along my larger cutting board for cleaning fish on the tailgate, just let me know.

Bringing and wearing my ice cleats this year, that fall last year took 7.5 months to heal up in the shoulder after alot of PT.

If I bring a wheel house, is the winetr access my only option for coming onto the lake, kinda steep there. Wondering how pulling a house back up the access goes?

I was out there last weekend with my 16' wheelhouse. No problem at all getting on or off the winter access with it.

This is from the DNR's web page, 2013 Minnesota Statutes

Wanton waste (destruction)

Wild Animals

97A.031 WANTON WASTE.

Unless expressly allowed, a person may not wantonly waste or destroy a usable part of a protected wild animal

You got me Donny smile but incase your serious, yes, that statute still does apply to fish as well.

Rough fish or game fish, it's all the same, either throw it back alive or use it, don't just kill for the sake of blood lust, or because you deem something not worthy of living 2c

Don, shouldn't you be on the lake??? grin

I had to go to my other house in bloomington for a few days. The animals were not biting for me yesterday so I thought I would let it warm up.

They are not biting as good as they do around the first part of December, but you can get into them pretty good if you do a little work.

At last years event the bite started off slow, but a big school was found in the area, and lots of fish were caught smile I think good old Tom S got big one for the day and ended up with honors smirk fun time, that's for sure!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
