I am going deer hunting next year in Iowa and want to use my Benelli Vinci. My question is, what choke tube do I use for slugs? I know it can't be full, mod., I don't want to buy a slug barrel. Thanks for your input in advance.

For many years I've use Improved Cylinder for slugs.

BTW- I know quite a few guys who use Mod and Full chokes in their shotguns for slugs. Not saying it's right or wrong. It's what they have and they use it. Seems to work just fine for them.

I never realized you could use a full choke for slugs. Can anyone explain if there is an advantage or disadvantage in using certain chokes for slugs?

I used the modified choke in my benelli super nova with federal truball slugs. I believe I emailed federal about it and that's what they recommended.

In my experience, the more open chokes will give you better accuracy. Granted, it's a slug so don't expect 1" patterns at 200 yards out.

Rifled slugs work best for me. (emphasis on for me) I do not use a rifled choke, I go regular straight out Improved cylinder on a smooth bore barrel.

The guys I know that use full and mod chokes use them because that's what they have. When I was younger the only shotgun I had was my 870 Wingmaster and it had a mod choke, no interchangeable chokes, and I dropped a few deer with it as a kiddo.

I honestly don't know aboot the science or balistics of it all. All I know is with all of my shotguns, (Remmington, Winchester, and Mossberg) I get the best accuracy using Improved Cylinder.

rifle slugs technically can be shot through any choke. the rifling is made to compress as it exits the barrel. various slugs will be greatly affected by certain chokes.

most slugs will say on the box which choke they recommended, which in a lot of times is IC or Cyc

slugs guns are very very finicky, id pick up a few different brands and see how they pattern with the recommended chokes.

back when i shot rifle slugs, my 870 express like brenneke KO's w cyc. choke, while my buds 870 like 3"remi sluggers w IC choke.

same gun, same batch we bought them bak when Galyans had a closeout sale

another bud uses the truballs in his BPS and can get 3" patterns at 75yrds

Improved Cly. choke is best for shooting regular rifled slugs threw your shotgun. However they do now make a rifled choke tube that will help out in accuracy for those with a smooth bore barrel.
