Actually spent the vast majority of the day sitting across the kitchen table from my dad just chatting, sipping coffee, and watching the rain come and go, then took him out for dinner and a beverage. And while the words "wow, this day really got away from us" were said, it was anything but a waste of a day.

Now I'm sitting "finning" a batch of grumpy's (thanks to Dealer for giving me the name) that have been on the table for a month being ignored.

Sounds like a good day. I have to be in southern Illinois tomorrow night so I guess i'll have to head out in the morning.

I worked on the big truck most of the day.

Just donated these decoys to the St. Francis American Legion. They are both good swimmers. The red/white is wicked slow with a nice wide turn. Green/white is a little quicker and with the large metal tail can be tuned to swim big or small, or left straight to swim pendulum style.

American Legion posts and VFW's are falling like bowling pins lately. St Francis is holding on by the skin of their teath. They are holding a Bojia feed and silent auction next Saturday. So if anyone is in the area, there may be deal to be had. All proceeds go directly to support the legion and the community charities and scholarships they work with.

My dad runs the Horseshoe club there, so I also made and donated a diamond willow and brass picking hook as well. With some minor effort it could be converted to a gaff hook.

Getting ready to head out he door to Alexandria for the State high School shoot. My son Davey shoots for Princeton today and this should be a fun experience for him. this is the largest youth shoot in the world with 3800 registered to shoot.

The team as a whole took 7th over all and Jounior Varsity team is going back for the next round. My son did Ok but didn't qualify for the next round. He is shooting a summer youth league to practice for the school league next year.

There were almost 4000 kids signed up and shooting for the state qualification and it was a great experience to witness.

Another rainy Saturday. Cutting fins for a few decoys. Waiting for things to dry out a little bit. Going to see if I can buy my decoys back later this afternoon. wink

Unless someone else outbids me.

I'm thinking it's getting close to time to start laying out the bases and skis for a fish house. If it's going to get finished I will need to get it started soon.

Well I didn't have to worry about being out bid. It seems they were misplaced confused

Everyone there is hopping they got misplaced and are mixed into the "support our troops" auction and golf tourney next weekend. I hope that's the case, cause then it's still going to a good cause. If they got pocketed I would be very upset.

Hopefully they are found and someone wasn't low enough to steal from a charity event

I am hoping that's not the case. I still spent a hundred bucks , I just picked up some rods I didn't necessarily need instead of trading my donated items for cash. In the end it would just mean 2 less decoys to get ready for the darkhouse booth at the hard water show. And another trip over there next Saturday to see if they show up.

I will be a lot more selective on what groups I donate items to in the future smirk

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
