How are those 2013 free agents doing??

So what do you guys think of the big free agents from last year and how they are playing, and more importantly how their teams are doing.

Greg Jennings- not even lead receiver on this team. Vikings 2-8-1

Mike Wallace- not even lead receiver in Miami. Among several players the Fins paid big money for. Dolphins 5-6

Stephen Jackson, Tony Gonzales- Atlanta, Falcons 2-9. Guess they shouldn't have traded all those draft picks away for Julio Jones.

Darelle Revis- Tampa Bay 3-8. Goes right in line with all the other free agents and money TB has blown over the past few years.

Washington Redskins- Since Dan Snyder took over as owner they have ALWAYS been very active in free agency. Think Albert Haynesworth and many other useless players. They traded away a bunch of picks to get RG3. 3-8

Lets not forget other losers like Chris Johnson, Joe Flacco, and Jared Allen who all got paid for what they did, not what they were going to do.

Point of this all???

Big name free agents barely work. Give them the big contract and they fall apart.

Interesting thread...I've wondered the same thing more than a few times.

It's easy to pick out players who don't produce after signing a big contract. Does anyone know what the actual data say regarding a player's performance the year before vs. the year after a big contract is signed? Is there a difference in results after signing a big contract if players sign with the team they were already on? What's the best measure of performance here--one year after, two years after? Individual stats irrespective of wins?

It's tough (maybe impossible) to say, though, because in team sports, there are lots of variables, and it's tough to control for one individual's performance. If a team spends a large amount of its allotted capital on one player, it might make sense that it has fewer resources to offer other players--and therefore, the quality of play from one high-paid individual might diminish not because he's doing poorly but because his supporting staff isn't as good.

We could just try to think of players that DO perform after a big contract, too. That wouldn't be definitive, of course, but it might be enlightening.

Jared Allen was previously under contract and didn't sign in 2013. Otherwise I agree with the assessment that all those players got paid big buy haven't produced. A lot of it I think is GMs thinking they are one player away. Then injuries strike and overall team play suffers.

Veterans make their deals based on past performances. That is fact. So its quite easy to analyze stats and say so and so isn't performing to expectations. Hence the reason many contracts are incentive laden now. They have the chance to make big money but must hit accelerators.

Buck, who do you think you are, Ted Thompson????

Free agents produce all the time, you just have to be smart about it. How can you include Tony Gonzalez in that group?? That guy is probably the best TE ever, he is double team'd pretty much every play, especially in the red zone where he does his dirty work. Greg Jennings? I've seen some pretty decent grabs by him this year but its not his fault the QB position is weak. Revis? He's a man guy and they have him playing zone. Not his fault either, but he still has a couple picks.

Now Im not saying go Dan Snyder on free agency but you need to tap that pool once in a while to get talent. Some teams just don't have the cap space to sign, doesn't mean their garbage players.

Weak sauce Buck..

Free agents NEVER produce for what they are paid.

Jennings Juice??? I was completely against it from the beginning. Said all along that a WR is worthless when you don't have anyone to throw the ball to him. Maybe our new MLB can get him the ball more than twice a game.

Tony Gonzalez. Once again you want to pay him for what he did in the past. "Best TE ever." If he is so great they should be doing better. He should be taking all these double teams leave Julio Jones and Roddey White open.

Revis is washed up. He is not a top CB anymore. He is a thing of the past.

Only when you are close does a few, very select free agents work. When you are miles away like the Vikings, Twins, Twolves, and Wild adding a few big name free agents does nothing butt ensure your mediocrity for years to come.

I think plenty of FA's have already made solid money and the team that takes the risk does just that takes the risk of watching them cash as many checks as they can until teams have had enough especially if they have a ring on, have been there and done that, packin it in if the team stinks or they have a beef with the coaches or whatever, they know they're nearly untouchable and the slightest injury can turn into doubtful if the team is toast for the year. Milk it milk it milk it, take less hits, buy your family a 4th house and call it a career.

A roster should always be supplemented with talent, through FA or draft, every year. Period. Regardless of if you have a franchise QB or not.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
