ICE!

Recommended Posts

I just heard that about half of the Harris channel on Little Rock had a skim of ice on it this morning.

It's hard not to think about the hard water when it's a balmy 20 degrees outside eek and the weatherman is calling for a low of 10 tonight. Highs in the 40s next week will warm thins back up though... but after that, who knows?

When do you think we will have enough ice for that first fool to walk out on?

Just got in from outside and....yeah....its really cold out!. Would think the diehards will be out Turkey Day weekend this year on some of the shallower water. If the long range holds will be about a mile west of Sartellangler the first weekend in Dec. ....maybe sooner...we'll see. Personally like to see 5/6 inches.

Great minds think alike wink that's the same one I was thinking of.

Complete waste of time for fishing, way too shallow. It does however have leeches in the early summer .

Oh I see.didn't mean to make it a big question.Just didn't feel like typing a whole bunch of stuff out.The two things I wrote about are two totally different places . The pond is the one that we were just pondering out loud with in a different st cloud topic.I was over there today and noticed down the hill of the pond on the credit union side there was a crunchy ice substance on the edge of the pond where the water meets the weeds. Next- the other body of water that I was posting about is Ackmans lake which is located in St Johns area.I was thinking that if I check out this lake soon I may find some ice there too.I figured since you guys were talking about ice discoveries I would add to the kiddy. smile Bakers was a good guess. So do I get that info now Rick J/k

We are in for a nice warm up at the end of this week; along with that I'm sure will come winds, so it will be awhile yet.

I'll guess some fool will walk out by Dec. 7th around here.

As far as Ackman's Lake Jeremy, lots of stunted sunfish with hammer handle pike. Fished heavily from the road in spring. In the past had decent crappies, as of late a 10" would be a whopper.

Good luck

Yeah I was just there a few days ago,I been going there at least once a month for a couple of yrs.Your right about the sizes of fish in there but once in a while it can be treasure .Lately I seen them in middle range depths in the evening. The wind has been the wall between me and the pans. When fishing is slow its better than nothing.

Horseshoe was 90% ice covered this morning. It has all melted since but it was a beautiful sight. Get your gear ready we will be on the ice soon.

After wednesday temps do not go above freezing again in the 10 day forecast. If this holds true we could have fishable ice in places thanksgiving weekend.

Sorry if I'm a little touchy on the 30 and critical update, stay off the d@#n ice please. My dad is getting quadruple bypass surgery in St. Cloud after a heart attack and his main surgeon has to leave immediately because of the guy falling through so surgery took an extra couple of hours exposing him further to infection etc. so use your common sense and go cast at the Mississippi river or something. Your poor decisions if you make them have a trickle effect elsewhere not to mention how your family will feel going through such unnecessary ordeal.

Yeah I heard the guy has 2 kids and 1 one on the way. No fish is worth your life. I can't even imagine what his wife is going through right now. I hope he can pull through this so he can be there to see his kids grow up.

Musky buck, sorry to hear about your Father, hope he makes a speedy recovery.

I agree, it's a little too early yet... Intact I just got back from a run around to check out the lakes, not much to report yet. Only one of the lakes I looked at had any ice at all, and that was on the shoreline that the wind wasn't beating up. Otherwise the only ice I saw was on the smaller ponds.

I fully expect there to be walkable ice somewhere by Black Friday. Saturday nights low in the 5 degree range with winds that look to die down should lock many lakes up. The shallow smaller lakes will make ice throughout the next week after they lock up. I know I should be tip-up fishing an hour south of St. Cloud, in some of the shallow bays by Black Friday.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
