Shot these three this morning by 9:45 a.m. One on private land and two on public all in the cattails by myself with no dog. Sixty first birthday today so they made nice Xmas and birthday presents.

Wow gahld, nice! Here's a my daily double. #40 & #41 for the year, both beautiful mature birds. Had to push 3 fields before I saw a rooster, LOTS of hens so hopefully next year should be great in this area. Haven't officially measured the tail yet, but it's about 1" longer than the 24" barrel on my Beretta so it should be another pb!

Ended the season on a high note...got my biggest bird of the year (and last one) in the cold temps. Great dog work and shooting was a plus today.

Saw a ton of birds. Hope mother nature is good to them this spring.

What could be my last bird of the year, & also my biggest at 26 3/4"! Pretty cool story on this guy. I had jumped a few birds out of some tall weeds & dumped one. I knew he went down dead but for some reason I couldn't find him. After searching the area for about 30 mins this guy finally decided to bust. I had been walking circles all around him the whole time. Amazing how hard these birds will hold sometimes. Thankfully ended up finding the other bird too, he had fell under a big sage brush that was covered in snow. Tomorrows the last day, hopefully I can find an hr or 2 to get out.

was 23 5/8".

Fishuhalik....you got a 26 inch plus! - thats a "boomer". That is a trophy bird.

In my book and experience, if you crack 24", you got a mature bird, older bird.

Since 2004, I have over 200 birds that I have harvested from MN, SD and ND.

I have only broke 24" two times.

Again...great bird!

Thanks walleye! I'm seriously considering mounting it. I already have a few ducks in the freezer from this fall, otherwise it'd be going on my wall for sure

Some late season birds, the first right before Christmas. 24 7/8" tail. Second was from the New Years day. Not a bad year this year, saw plenty of hens and roosters, hopefully the weather cooperates and we have a good spring. Its a long wait till October.

Last wild bird my old timer every retrieved, the effing cancer got him and we had to take care of his pain, almost 11 years old at the time of the picture.

Mine are all taken in North Dakota. Only been pheasant hunting in MN a couple times but I've done a ton of grouse hunting. Where are you going?

hey fishuhalik, I'm new to this so have patience. I'm trying to plan a trip out to mn. this coming oct. I use to hunt pheasant in iowa until the birds vanished. now I kinda just try to have one trip a year for grouse and pheasant. I'm going to Effie mn just because someone advised me to. are you familiar with northern mn. if you could direct me to a good area I would appreciate it. that's a long way to come not knowing where I should go when I get there. its hard to plan on a place to stay, where to go etc. I thought if I struck out in Effie, then we would go somewhere out there that has public hunting grounds......ans. if you get this. thanx , tennman.

Hey there tennman123, I would love to help you out best I can. Been chasing the wild rooster for 22 years and got lots of tail feathers to show for it. Let me know if you are interested. I would take you out to South Dakota where we have a business in hunting and fishing. Just let me know if you are interested. Would love to help another sportsman out.

dale, I appreciate the comeback.....are you talking about a hunting preserve. from what I have been hearing the birds are down everywhere. I hate to give in and give up but things are not looking too good for us bird hunters. that's a long way to travel for me and my buddies and then not know where to go when I get out there. I know Wisconsin pretty well but the birds are scarce there also. I will listen to all comers.....talk to me.

Not going to lie to you at all. The numbers are down out there, but we got lots of birds again this year. We got over 12,000 acres of private hunting land to chase the birds. We had a group of 10 guys come up this year and we filled them out in 3 hours with 30 birds. All the customers we had this year, we always shot birds and saw plenty of birds. After the first couple snows and once they got group up we would see 500-800 in a spot. Seeing them was no problem, just getting to them was the harder part. We had to plan it out with the hunters on how to go after them and once we had a plan it was game on. We gave away a 3 day hunt last year at my pheasants forever club in Minnesota for 3 guys, and they ending up staying one other day cause the birds they say and shot. I know we could and would get you on birds all depends on the spring we have up here again. I have a Email if you would like it to contact me to learn more about it.

I responded to some of your questions about grouse and Effie along with your Tmberwolf Inn question in the forum. If you want to hunt pheasant on the way home in Minnesota I would recommend it as you have seen in from the photos posted they are around. You will likely have to do some work but you should be able to get a few. I would check out the MN DNR website, they post a pheasant road side count survey every year, you can then see what counties had the highest. They will post a new one before the 2014 season. Get yourself a Gazetteer, and if you can, the southern WMA map from the DNR, I believe they are free. These will get you to the public land.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
