Stoked for the game tonight!! Hopefully it will be a sign of things to come. They are probably a few moves away from being a real contender, but this team should definitely make some noise.

This is what I am thinking too, kids need a little more time but are close to breaking out as a group. We could use a solid shut down dman and maybe a high end former gopher with an ncaa ring and we just might be set. wink

Noooooo!!!! Anything but a Gopher.

Of course Vanek would be a sweet pickup, but at what cost?

Sweet! Wow amazing 5.6 million cap hit too!!! I think he is probably our most talented forward.

Parise?

Nanne was on barreiro tonight and said he would be shocked if vanek isn't here next year. We will see. I have been predicting this move for next year for about a year now. Buffalo can't sign him. His wife is from here. He lives here. Pominville signed a long term deal. Chips are falling into place.

I do agree we need more grit at D though.

Vaneck would be a TAD bit of an upgrade.:

I thought the Wild outplayed the Kings. Quick is a great goalie. My only concern was Backs got beat pretty easily in the shootout but its only one game.

Coyle looks like a BEAST out there.

Yup - if it's an average NHL goalie, that game is 3 or 4 to 2. Even as it was, Pommer hits a post, Heately has one roll across the line after a quick whistle, Parise was sniffing around all night... Little puck luck and that's a W. Against a cup favorite, I'll take it, especially with opening night hoo-ha and a pile of new guys on the roster.

The play like that they win more often than not.

Agree on Coyle - kid is a horse. Love Nino's game too. Gets to the net and plays big. Other than the 3rd period I thought that second line looked awfully good, as did the second unit PP.

W would have been nice but already looking like a much better team than in the past.

Need someone to be able to put the puck in the net this year, not wait for Vanek next year. We outplayed and out-shot LA pretty badly last night and did not get the "W". Overall I liked what I saw....I just hope they will shake things up early on to find some more offense.

Parise?

I love Parise, hardest worker out there and our best goal scorer but I just don't think he has puck skills Pommers has.

It will be expensive, short term we take Heatley's 7.5 cap hit and give it to Vanek. If we can pull it off we almost HAVE to do it. Long term it could cause some trouble, the kids will need to be paid some day and all these big contracts will bite us in the arse, just hope we can make a big push for the cup before that happens.

Impressed with El Nino for most of the game. Coyle is going to be a game changer this year. Man, that kid has it all, size, speed, shot.

I really like that second power play unit.

They were a little out of sync, but you could definitely see the potential there.

That combo could put some serious pucks in the net this year.

Backstrom has never been good in shootout situations. I cringe when I see him in there.

I think we need to swap Coyle and Koivu. It makes it possible to move Granlund up, Heatly down and keep some experience on the second line. I think a move like that could speed the development of all the youngsters involved in those lines.

But, even of they don't make those changes they looked good and I think we will only get better as the year progresses.

+1 Good idea, putting Coyle up with Parise/Pom will make them all more productive. Koivu is no longer a top-line NHL center IMO.

Liked what I saw for talent. Didn't like what I saw in the third pariod. They looked a little gassed. Could be long season if conditioning is an issue.

Maybe we could trade Heatley and Backstrom for Miller and Vanek. Bam!

I know salary cap. Would be nice for us.

Worried how good the JETS look. Looking forward to that game Thursday.

Setagucci was always a sreaky goal scorer but right now his confidence is high. Ducks will be tough, I think 2 nite.

Other than a "standing still" slapshot off the top bar I thought Heatley looked awful, Brodziak was not good and it is evident Coyle carries that line. Top line looked very good, but 2 & 3rd lines are not carrying their weight. Scandella was a liability on D.....I did think Dumba looked good. One other observation...I think Sutter should turn on the jets more and skate with the puck...he seems to take a couple steps and then goes into his "glide" and starts looking for an open man but there seems to be plenty of open ice and he has the skills and speed to take it himself in for a shot. Wonder who they bring up if Coyle is out for a while? They are not the team I had hoped we'd see.....yet! Go Wild or Go Home!

Is Scandella the new Skoula? He was brutal out there. At times, he looked like he just didn't know what to do.

Not the greatest start, but hey-2 pnts.. The team will be just fine and lets not over-analyze after a couple of games.

On another note: Jets play 2 nite.. That team (jets) may be the dark horse.

With Coyle we have 2 lines that can score. I like wha I've seen except for the defensive coverage and that is correctable.

Backs could have been a little better in either game as well but he wasn't horrible.

Well, looks like the injury bug is getting an early start gnawing on the Wild. Of course it has to be the one position where we don't have the depth - center. Plus it's Coyle, who looked to be off to a great start. Hopefully not out too long.

Sounds like Granlund (who has also been good so far) will be 2nd line pivot with Zucker and either Heatley or Nino. Personally, I'd like to see Nino there. He's had some gaffes that I think are partly due to learning a new system, but he's a big body that can skate with Zucker and Granlund. Heately is a big body but not so much with the skating anymore.

I'm not as sold on Zucker as a lot of Wild fans seem to be. He has flashes of great play but he's got some developing to do in his own end. He tends to just wander off defensively.

OnAFly - Agree on Scandella. Man he was dreadful Saturday night. Kind of his MO unfortunately... He was really good Thursday against LA, and follows it up with a terrible game. Total lack of consistency.

I hear this, saw him turn them on during the playoffs a few times and he can fly when he wants to. With all the ice time he gets I think he tries to conserve energy when he can.

Sound like we are getting bad scandella right now, hope he figures it out soon because he was good in the playoffs.

Good point Bear...never thought of that but when he is on the ice over half of the game I see the need to conserve but might he be better used if they cut his time down a bit but asked him to go out and "turn it on" at every opportunity?

I would rather Suter log the ice time than rush the puck. The reason he may look like he has all this speed or is so skilled is because everyone knows he is a pass first type of player. Having said that, he can pick his opportunities to turn it up, but I dont want him doing it on a regular basis. He is far too valuable with the ice time he eats up to lose any of that for what little potential benefit (if any) we would get in return.

Ya I think I'll take Suter and Brodin 30 minutes a night. Like what I am seeing from Ballard so far, the rest make me a little nervous in the D-zone.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
