GPS cold weather operation??

Kingfisher

Question

I place my GPS on a mounting bracket on the dash of the snowmoile. Coming off LOW it would not function from being too cold, it worked fine after it warmed up in the pickup. Is there a remedy for this problem?

I have a gps mounted to the handle bars and it also freezes up and then shuts off.It seems to do this at the worst possible time. To make sure that I have it when I really need it in the cold, I wear a shirt with a front pocket and keep it warm and check as needed. This isn't very convenient but sometimes necessary.Metro

How about putting a hand warmer in a zip bag and putting it over (around) the gps? Finns.

Liquid crystal displays don't respond well in cold weather. Do a search for DC electric blanket. There's small models that you can plug into the cig lighter.

Thanks for your replies. Checked out the electric blanks, still contemplating.

If you can find them, lithium batteries wont lose power in the cold. I've got a set in my digital camera and it works great with them in the cold.

Use Finns reply. Thats what I would recommend. Just tape the pocket-sized heater around the back (battery) side of the GPS unit. Probably insulate the backside of it with something. I'm not sure about the Ziploc bag idea because it might seal out the oxygen and snuff out the reaction going on in the heat pack.
