Can anybody give me a clue about where and when would be the best time and place to go after whitefish and tullibees on LOW? They taste absolutely fantastic when they are smoked. Also, is there anyplace in the LOW area that will sharpen auger blades?<P>------------------<BR>DIRTBALL2

K.F, I do not angle for them, but a few years back there were two guys fishing tullibees on the SW end of Arnesen's reef, they were using very small jigs with wax worms. They were pulling them out as fast as they could get their hooks back in the water. It was later in the winter maybe in March, as the weather was mild and they stood outside. Looked like fun, good luck.

I've never targeted them specifically, but I've gotten into them pretty good by accident. Although I catch them over on the East end occasionally, I've found many more West near Rocky Point. If you get on the edges of Arneson's, 12, and 16 mile reefs you should find a few. I also had luck getting them to hit small jigs with waxies. It's pretty fun when the walleyes are tough going.<BR>Scoot

Keith<BR>I only fish the Ontario side of LOW.<BR>If you care to take a little adventure, head up to Miles bay about 10 miles north of Morson. Sometimes the tulibees are so thick it is hard to get your jig to pass thru the school to get down to what we are trying to catch. Good Luck,<BR>Daryl

Daryl<BR>I fish out of Nestor Falls quite a bit and I've been eyeing up Miles Bay as good area to try. The tulibee action sounds great, but do you also catch crappies or walleyes there? Also, where do you stay when you fish that area?

MM<BR>I either stay at Buena Vista Resort or at a friends cabin near Berglund, our place is not winterized. Usually fish crappies during the day (about 10 to 2) and then go to an evening walleye spot somewhere. Fishing is great and NO people, seldom see more then a dozen or more other than us. We are heading up this wed. and will most likely be up in Miles on thurs. We are easy to pick out, 5 sleds,2 or 3 portables and a bunch of youngsters having a blast.<BR>Good Fishin'<BR>Daryl

MM<BR>Do you ever fo to Hay Island? We have done very well there for crappies.<BR>Daryl

Daryl<BR>Yes we have done well for crappies at Hay Island as well as the other hot spots in Sabaskong. Where is Buena Vista located and what sort of structure do you fish for walleyes on Miles Bay?

MM<BR>Buena Vista resort is in Morson(west of Nestor Falls)about 30 miles north of Baudette on hiway 621. Our best walleye spot puked on us last year and are still scoping out a bunch of spots. Typically on the bottom edges of reefs at dusk or we will occasionally have schools come thru at about 20'down in 35-40'of water while we are fishing crappies. I assume they are chasing the tullibees which are at about 15' down. When they come thru they are HUNGRY!<BR>We may even check out the reefs near the US border this Friday.

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion.  Ice was in very good condition.  Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park.  There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing.  The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out.  The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island.  There is a short spur road going east about half mile out.   The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes.  Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher.  The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight.  You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas.  There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off.  Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them.   Fishing was average.  Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit.  Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75".  Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes.   Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
