I am heading up Saturday with my family and a few others to Arcadia Lodge on turtle lake. This will be my families first trip up, and to say the least we are excited. My kids are 11, 9 and 5. Any tips for the lake this time of year? We are not picky about what we catch, the kids just like to have the pole bend. But it would be nice to find some panfish every now and then for a meal.

Also we don't own a boat, so we are renting a pontoon. That obviously will limit what we can do.

Thanks!

For panfish this time of year, look for sunken islands, and points with a good amount of submerged vegetation. The lake is very clear, I usually go out from shore til I find the bunch of submerged weeds 12-15 ft. The deeper your bait, the bigger the panfish. I just caught a limit of nice ones last weekend and looking forward to doing the same this weekend, they are fun but there's also tons of rock bass. I prefer leeches over worms. Your more than likely to run into some smallies as well. On a calm day, you'll see them surfacing everywhere mid-afternoon.

Thanks for the reply and great to hear that advice! I had talked to some serious fisherman that I work with and they had suggested Leeches under bobbers for the kids too. I got all the light poles setup with slip bobbers and ready to go this weekend. I hope 1 of them hooks up with a smallie.... I cannot wait to see their face.

Definitely good advice for that lake. It's extremely clear and can be difficult to fish. We've done well on deep weed flats with minnows for crappies. DNR says there's a good amount of nice walleyes in there, but I have yet to catch one.

All of the walleyes I have caught on Turtle came after dark. Not evening but dark. The smallies will keep you entertained during the day though. They use to have a guide stop in on Sunday afternoons I think. If they still do it is worth the time to visit with them. I am sure you and the kids will enjoy Arcadia Lodge, lots of activities for the kids.

OnAFly.... We would LOVE to get the kids into some crappies. So when you say deep weed bed, you mean in the 15ft range?

Thanks!

A couple weekends ago, me and 2 friends of mine were trolling crawler rigs pretty much all day with no luck. I thought to switch to a deep running crank. Well I did and as soon as we came up on that point (12 ft), BAM, smacked it so hard I thought it was a pike. Caught and released a 29 inch eye. Not even an hour later my cousin, in a different boat, caught a 28 in. So there in their, it's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time with the right lure smile.

Gosh, I'd love to find some crappies though, I've always had trouble this time of year as far as they go.

I do think I read that they have a guide come out, I will spend some time with him. I am hoping minnows and/or leeches under a bobber will get the kids into a few fish. I am not sure this trip has any walleye fishing in it. We rented a pontoon for the week. So there will be a bunch of anchoring up to bobber fish and dad doing some casting....

Thanks for all the tips! I will report back....

Any one been out in turtle latly? Heading up wed. Hoping to fish Thursday morning. Looking for a place to start for eyes. Are they on the weed lines or is the long winter still screwing them up? Never fished the lake so anything helps.

Have you caught them on Turtle before? If so, when and how?

Only times I've heard of people catching them was early season fishing smallmouths. That lake is tough due to the super clear water and thick carpet of weeds on the bottom down to about 20ft.

Big turtle had a lot of pike basically jumping into the boat from 14-18 fow on saturday. In all we kept 15 handles for the frying pan, and released 8 in the 30-34" range from Thursday evening through Sunday morning. Quite a few 14-16" bass also.

My daughter's first bass. Didnt put it on the ruler, but this bucket was about 11-12 inches.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
