What do most of you do with Burbot? Throw them on the ice or let em go? I will be up there this weekend and am just wondering what the general attitude is towards them. I will have a ten yr old with me who loves fighting big fish too. What are the best methods of getting them to bite?

Please don't throw Burbot out on the ice! It's not only illegal, it's extremely un-sportsmanlike. Many enjoy eating them, and contrary to what some may think, there not just nasty bottom-feeders, there feeding habits are similar to Walleyes. If you don't want to eat them, please throw em'back.

Crappace, I think it's best to just slide the pout back down the hole.Leaving them to rot on the ice makes no sense at all. Your son will really enjoy the battle to get them in. The best part is when he take that 1st look at them. My son couldn't believe how ugly they are. Stay within 2-3 inches of the bottom for the best bite. Have a great trip,my son and I are headed up tommorrow. GO VIKES DrJ.

When I head up to LOW and when i catch a pout my guide says to throw them on the ice because most of the people don't want them in the Lake but i always love catching a huge pout. What i would do is your personal preference but if your son loves to catch one throw it back.
------------------
watch out here i come ole mighty eye!!

Either eat them or put them back in the hole.

You have to eat the lawyers!! They are a blast to pull in and surprisingly tasty when you fry them up. Don't get much off of a fish, but it is worth the pain of looking at them!

Another way that we have found is boil them up and then put them in the refrigerator and cool them down. You can then serve them with cocktail sauce just like shrimp. Very good, next to the melted garlic butter this is my preference. Good luck, hang on. Bill

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
