Strikemaster has a sweet auger line-up. Jiffy has the built to last reputation and Eskimo has the reputation of best auger for the buck.

Check the Eskimo Barracuda, SAME 2 hp motor as Strikemaster and Jiffy. Best of all, it's priced right.

i'd say the best 10 incher is the jiffy three horse with the chipper blade, it is heavy but cuts like nothing else, i got one of each ( strikemaster 8" express and jiffy 3.5 hrs 10" ) and i would say that the jiffy works better for big holes than a SM scraper blade, also if you plan on useing it to reopen perm house holes i've heard from many that a scraper blade does not work and can be dangerous.

I have a Jiffy 3hp and its ok. A guy on the ice drilled a hole for me with his strike master and was impressed at the speed it drilled, was very fast compared to my jiffy. The blade setup is different from Jiffy to StrikeMaster but the motors are the same. Jiffy seems to sell alot of the 3hp where I see Strikemaster dominating in the 2hp. Id try Strikemaster myself when I get another auger but that won't be for years yet.
Cheers!!

Strikemaster Ultra is one sweet auger - it is 9", not 10. It has a new 3 blade cutting system, so you can get away with a 2 H.P. In my opinion the 2 H.P. engine, whichever auger line you decide on, is a much better engine than the 3. Strikemaster also offers the lazer mag Xpress in 10", and the XL-3000 in 10" and 3 H.P., if your set on that size. Good luck!

In my opinion, Srikemaster is the way to go in ice augers. Their Lazer mag and turbo cutting systems are not matched by either Jiffy or Eskimo. No matter what brand you buy you are getting the same Tecumseh engine on it. The 2hp will be a better starter in the long run and give you less problems in the future. Tecumseh had some issues on their 3hp a few years back with their carburators but have since resolved that. The 2hp will be lighter to drill more holes and with the new cutting system on the Srikemaster you can't go wrong. Buy the cutting system and not what they tell you it has for a engine because they are all the same. Each manufactuer does their gearratio different and cutting system and that is it. Put a Jiffy and Eskimo against the new Srikemaster cutting system and they will both loose. The only diffent engine out their that I am aware of is the Shark by Eskimo which is a Italian made motor. Sweet unit but still lacking a good cutting system as they are still using their 2 blade design without the curved turbo system. Strikemaster is my choice and I currently own a Eskimo.

I've owned strikemasters in the past with good luck. I have an Eskimo Shark now and it's the easiest starting, best running auger I've owned in 15 years !! My shark is on it's third year with the original blades still and they still cut like new. The advantages I've found in the Shark are the primer bulb on the carb, so with one or two pumps before pulling, it starts on the first or second pull EVERY time, even at -25.
Also, I can set this auger down on the ice on any of its' 4 sides and it will stand up and not leak gas, fill the muffler with snow, or fall over. Like previousely stated, the shark does not have a Tecumseh engine. It's more like a chain saw engine and it runs at 11,500 RPM compared to the 6000 - 7000 RPM of Jiffy's and Strikemasters.

jiffy, only one blade and the point, .. stealth-2 tiny blades more. all chipper blades very easy to sharpen on site. and you can avoid the trip to big lake and the 25 min stay.

Get a Jiffy! They kick A$$! The chipper blade system is the way to go. De-icer armor coating is a great idea. No ice buildup since I got the Jify!Got the8" instead of the ankle breaker 10".

Definataly Strikemaster!!!
I have had the same strikemaster auger for 14 years without a problem, that is until this year. The main drive gear that presses on the clutch had stripped out. I stopped by the Strikemaster factory in Big Lake to see if I could get the part. The kid behind the cust service counter grabbed my broken gear, disappeared for 5 min, then reappeared with a new gear pressed onto my clutch assy. I proceded to ask him what the damage was, and he said no charge. With that type of cust service, I am a lifelong Strikemaster customer.

Got Fish,
I got the same auger this fall the 10" 3 HP Stealth and what a pleasure it has been to use. I have alway like Jiffy's and have always used them my last one was just a model 30 10" that was over 20 years old. You can't bet something that can last that long. But this new one just kiss a@@. It will fly through the ice. I have been very impressed with it so far.

I haven’t been as far north as the chair yet so I have no idea what condition leech has left in in!  I think he should take it home and restore it.   Big Rice has was a b*ch to paddle.  I didn’t miss it this weekend and won’t miss it any other weekend I don’t make it there.

IKR!   I’m hopefully gonna be in Ely in a couple weeks but I’ll be chasing ducks more than grouse.  Not the best place to go for ducks but I love it up there in October.

As long as the birds don’t fly I am good. I can catch fish through the ice fairly well.

My cousin and I just returned from beautiful Lake Vermilion after 4.5 days of the most spectacular walleye fishing you could ever hope for. Usually our mutual friend joins us but his father passed away and he had to opt out. We arrived late Saturday afternoon and packed things up after our morning outing Wednesday. We stopped at Cabelas on the way up and found them to be sold out of pike suckers. While they had them, they were charging 99 cents each! We then stopped at Harris bait shop and found a help yourself situation that was also out of pike suckers. They sold them while available for 6 for $6! We eventually found them locally for the same price as last year. During our stay, we used pike suckers, rainbow mix, and crawlers. The walleyes hit them all but, I believe, the rainbow mix caught the most, the crawlers were almost as productive, and the pike suckers produced the biggest fish.  We caught them in depths ranging from 13' to 27'. They were in the rocks and in the mud depending on the time of day. We caught walleyes all day every day with 5 o'clock PM to ~7 o'clock PM being optimum for quantity. The weather was absolutely HORRIBLE with high winds and non-stop rain early in the trip. Boat control was very difficult and I struggled to keep our speed around that .4mph to .6mph. Hits were fast and furious but the hit to catch ratio was at best 5 or more hits to one catch . We stuck with the 1oz bottom bouncers, 3 red beads, and a size 2 hook for the big suckers. I found a shorter 3' leader to be most effective. We caught 153 walleyes on our trip and I would bet we had at least 5 times that many hits!. Now, with all that said, we don't feed line to walleyes to help avoid gut hooks and that certainly gives rise to a poor hook-up ratio. We ate fish twice and brought home our limits. Everything else went back. The walleyes ranged in size from ~13" to 26". We caught lots of slot fish and fair numbers of 15"-19" fish. In addition, we caught 10 smallmouth and only one jumbo. Our really big fish were never landed. My cousin had a true giant walleye laying on top of the water right beside the boat and grabbed her by the base of the tail in an attempt to scoop her into the boat. She was having none of that and with a major flop, snapped the leader. We didn't use a net because I forgot it at the dock. Getting old is a bitch. I had two different walleyes(I'm sure) hooked on Tuesday that came off directly below the boat. Both fish I thought were snags when they hit. Anyone who thinks walleyes don't fight have never caught a truly big one. Both fish ran off several yards of line while fighting to get free. Eventually they both succeeded. I would hesitate to say how big I think my cousins fish was that he had beside the boat, but, my wife and I have caught some really big walleyes in Lake Vermilion and I know what a big walleye looks like. That walleye was absolutely enormous.  We've decided to bring my cousin's two sons back up for a short trip a little later on. Hopefully, the walleyes will still be in a feeding frenzy. Lastly, I usually like to include pictures with my posts. I have a big problem this time, I got a new phone and I know nothing about transferring the pictures. That will be remedied when we come back up. In the meantime....... Good Fishing, MarkB🙂

I got some cool jigs this year this a picture from Slab Bait Shop. The 2nd to last photo is one of my jig boxes with them in it. The last photo has some Macula jigs and if your eyes are getting old these are awesome to tie!! I won the auction for the last photo so I got all of the plastics and jigs.
