Minnows or Leeches in June?

Recommended Posts

Headed to Namakan in about a week. What would be best for catching some keeper sized walleye, minnows or leeches? If minnows, what type. I have always just used fatheads and have only done ok at best.

Any idea of what depth they are at with the late ice-out?

I would make sure to have both with. If you have multiple people with you, have one use minnow and other leech. I use rainbow minnows. Water temp is mid to upper 40's. Good luck!

Plus 1+. I have both and use the Leechs more on less windy slower drift days and use big Rainbows on rougher faster drift days. wink

Thanks for the info.

Any opinion on the best place to get rainbows between Cook and the Ash trail turn off would be appreciated.

Couple years ago when I was up there, one of the bait shops along the way didn't even have rainbows. Ended up with fatheads but still did OK.

Was just up fishing Kab and shinners worked the best for us.. I did hear that some people were using Fathead's and Rainbows... There is a gas/bait station right at the turn off of 53 going towards the Ash..Not sure if they have what you need but if they dont the Gateway Store will have what you need.. Just go North on 53 a few more miles until you see the big Walleye...

We also did very well on shiners but one night it was jumbo leeches and another was fatheads. Water temp went from low 50s last Sunday to 60 on Saturday.

This was also the first time in 40 years we ran across 2 separate boats that tried to claim whole sandbars as their own.
