JeremyCampbell

Recommended Posts

After seeing a local fisherman's catch of some trout.I was planning on going to big watab lake and fish for trout this time at this lake.I baught a spinner and also wanted to set up something with Gulp trout nuggets.I havnt fished for trout since I was 9.I'd like to make use of my new trout stamp on my fishing licence.weather permitting would it be good to look for trout at this time?Or should I stick to the walleye for now?I was planning on taking the boat with a buddy of mine this weekend.

Troll with little Raps as deep as you can get them. I'm talking 20- 25' deep in 60' of water! Good luck! wink

Keep an eye out for surface activity. I've been out there on days when it seemed the trout were performing circus shows and clearing 2 ft easy! If there is any activity you can troll for them just a few feet below the surface. I like to use small floating minnow raps, but small spoons will work just fine. Maybe some people have success with trout nuggets, but I would leave that stuff at home and just use the ol' reliable worms smile

Don't overlook using a slip bobber. I've had good success using slip bobbers and crawlers.

Minnows aren't used often due to the fact that they're not allowed on most trout lakes. Big Watab does allow the use of live minnows however. I've used crappie minnows on lakes where allowed, and rainbows and browns will go after them. I would start just a few feet below the bobber, then adjust accordingly.

I used minnows over there but I ended up leaving the trout nuggets on my dash board. The guy at the sporting store said to me,"Big Watab oh you want these trout nuggets for that lake"

This is what I would do this time of year wink If you have decent electronics you can fine tune a little better to where they are holding, but if you don't..... get that smallerish type "rap" down in that range and troll away....you'll get some fish.

I will have to say that I have tried the Trout nuggets all over this state and have yet to catch a Trout on any brand. But they do work well in a mouse trap. I used them last fall and winter in the garage. Caught about 10 mice and about 8 shrew! They really need to repackage them as Mice trap bait! laugh

Weight's, Dippys divers, what ever it takes. I have done well with cowbell lures in front of small raps which will weight it down as well. wink

Jeremy,

It's been a couple years since I last fished Watab but there is a pretty constant Mayfly hatch there this time of year. I have always had really good luck hanging by one of the sunken islands fishing for gills during the afternoon, then just before dusk I move out into the main basin and just float around casting flies with a nymph dropper. During the nightly hatch it is easy to pick off surface feeding trout this way.

Fly,too much info on gills ,It can get in the wrong hands to some one like me j/k .lol Yeah those are good spots by the islands or on top of them.My motor is acting up.I will have to hold my thumb out at the dock for now until I get my motor resolved.

Went out there this afternoon.Went to our usual spots for panfish.Limits were taken away to the frying pan. Some bass and crappies made it in the fryer too.Mainly we sat on sixteen ft and the pans were from 5'-10'.Any lower were a few bass.Crawlers in the beginning and ended with plastic worms. No trout today.

I'm new to the whole trout fishing thing but the first time I was out I got a few now I'm hooked. The first time me and a friend just jigged with crawlers but wondering if trolling a spinner and a crawler harness with half a crawler would pay off or trolling with a small mepps spinner with a bullet weight in front of it would work.

Never tried it but would think it would work. Have also thought that trolling a castmaster would be worth a shot....they are like trout crack when casting. Jigging will work, so will slip bobbering, surface presentations also are effective during primetime, but you can simply cover more ground trolling after the water warms and the fish start spending more time in the deeper water. Nothing wrong though with pannie fishing during the day, and then trying to bang on some trout in the evening wink

Crawlers off of a spinner and harness work great and so would a mepps. They are spooky, so let out alot of line. I had better luck fishing it 1st light then switching to cranks and lead core as the day progressed.

LOVED that Lake!

  • 3 weeks later...

Has anyone ever tried downriggers out there this time of year, haven't been out on watab since this spring, I just rigged up a couple downriggers on my boat and was curious if anyone else has tried with downriggers right now.

Picked these up online for $10 a piece, welded the rod holders on and fabricated swivel mounts.

If I'm not using the downriggers or I want to bolt my duck blind on I can just un-bolt the board

Caught my fair share of them this spring trolling the smallest size xrap they make a few hundred feet behind planer boards. Just curious if they are still active when they move deep. Hope to find out one of these nights.

Made a couple downrigger weights last night so I could try them out this evening

Melted down scrap wheel weights and made a mold

Had my best luck with the downrigger down 24' over 45-65' deep.

Made it myself seeing as how a do-it mold runs over $100. Bought the two hemispheres from an ornamental iron supplier for $3 a piece, the rest was scrap steel. Haven't weighed them yet but according to my calculations they should be 10lbs plus or minus a few ounces

If you have or know someone with a smoker it's a no brainer what I would go for, just made a nice batch of smoked rainbows, some sweet some regular then made some trout spread some hot and some regular. It's very hard to beat.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
