BlueBasser
Any good lake recommendations around Tofte? Coming up at the end of the month and would love to chase some Smallmouth or Walleyes while I am there. Fairly small boat so smaller inland waters are preferred. Thanks for the information! 'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders monstermoose78 Posted May 15, 2013 'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders Share Posted May 15, 2013 So many of the lakes have smallies and walleyes. I would hit crescent lake and Pike Lake. Two Island is good for smallies and walleyes but is a little drive.
James_R
The walleyes are pretty small in that area. Ok if you're fishing with small children but probably not worth a long drive.
'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders monstermoose78 Posted May 15, 2013 'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders Share Posted May 15, 2013 Lots of good eating walleyes and some trophies as well. My families cabin is near there. Yes there is better trophy areas but none so nice to visit.
James_R
It's pretty no doubt but still home to the 12" walleye. Nice area for herring, whitefish, and lakers but I wouldn't bet on catching too many trophy eyes.
M Leslie
Second the recommendation for Crescent. Alternatively, no smallies, but White Pine is a pretty short drive up the Sawbill or Caribou tr. and used to be a fairly good early season Walleye Lake. Haven't been there in a number of years, but was always my opening day lake back in the day.
jvm1
Anybody know if Crescent is open yet?
JBMasterAngler
You won't be too far from a couple good designated trout lakes...echo and hogback. Early in the season it shouldn't be too hard to catch a limit.
tolle141
Anybody know if Crescent is open yet? +1 I'll be up there Memorial Day weekend. Crescent isn't a trophy walleye lake, but there are a lot of small eaters and the smallies and muskies keep you busy
protrapper
What's the definition of a trophy? There's some great walleye lakes in that area. Just got to know where an how to fish them.
'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders monstermoose78 Posted May 22, 2013 'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders Share Posted May 22, 2013 I agree protrapper that the area has some great eye lakes.
kaparzo
I just returned from a trip on Crescent. 10 guys fished 3.5 days. We caught 9 walleye, 3 northren, 5 muskies and ~50 smallies. Most of the smallies (12-17") came from smaller lakes that are connected but have warmer water. All of the walleye (10-20") caught were from the same spot in the evening. All of the muskies (24-33") were caught on small cranks or jigs. Water temp on Crescent was 53 when we left and warming up a degree each day. All of the reports from camp except one were very slow. Fishing improved each day for everyone I talked to.
'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders monstermoose78 Posted May 29, 2013 'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders Share Posted May 29, 2013 My dad, uncle, and I fished Crescent as well and had some of the most awesome walleye fishing I have ever had up there. Pictures will be posted when I get the the email from my dad. We caught over 70 walleyes which most of the were under 13 inches but we did keep a limit of walleyes up to 19.5 inches. My uncle wanted to try small mouth bass so he kept 2 of them. I caught a personal best smallie of 20.25 inches which was released for some some other angler to tag into. I re;eased 6 bass in the 18 to 20.25 from Crescent Lake. The key for eyes and smallies was super shallow. less then 4 feet best was around a foot or 2 and the windy shore lines. Trout were hard to come by for us we caught splake and we fished for the for 3 days. Biggest splake was 13 inches long and my monster splake was maybe 5 inches long. We trolled, bottom fished, bobber fished, and casted fall in trees which produced both trout. The weather was awesome and so was the fishing. We also saw a lynx on the grade road as we headed back to the cabin. No moose were seen but we did get some great wildlife photos as well. Good Luck for those next weekend. jvm1
Monstermoose were you up there memorial weekend as well? We did decent, it was slow in the day and picked up at night, but everyday was better. nothing but males for us on the walleye front, they were happy to see us as they let lose as soon as you grabbed them. I'm guessing the spawning is finally over and the bigger females will show up now, that lake has to be on fire right now. Caught 2 smallies on the last day but they had no size to them. 'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders monstermoose78 Posted May 30, 2013 'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders Share Posted May 30, 2013 Yeah I just got home yesterday. We had a few males that liked us as well. We did have some females but they did not have any eggs in them they were spawned out. Yes the bite picked up closer to dark. I did have a big walleye on i would say it was 25 to 28 inches but it found a log to wrap around and broke off. When we cleaned the fish we check the stomachs and they were eating some little bugs that looked like mayfly nymphs.
jvm1
Good stuff! Can I ask if you picked up any of your wallies during the day? I've been fishing that lake for almost 10 years now and have yet to catch one during the day, be it deep shallow cloudy or sunny. Most frustrating lake I have fished but I love it up there. The ones we cleaned had minnows in the belly. Most of ours came from leeches under bobbers but we did get a few on Rapalas too
'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders monstermoose78 Posted May 30, 2013 'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders Share Posted May 30, 2013 We get some during the day but normally it is rate at last light. Saturday was cloudy and the there was a nice chop on the lake and they were biting very well for us before about 3 in the afternoon until we got are limit. They were biting better around 6 but we did were had all our walleyes and wanted to get back and get them cleaned.

Ive fished this area a lot also and still trying to figure out the 12" walleye thing... never had a problem finding walleyes in the 17+" class and the occasional trophy... Guess you just got to know how to fish them lakes in that country...

Love to hear more about this lake and people who fish it often, hopefully I can get back up there this year later in the summer or fall. When we got there on tuesday we helped a guy land the biggest muskie I have seen on the lake by culvert there, we were fishing from shore as it had been pouring all day. The guy flagged us down as we drove by. He had been fighting it for 20 min and had no net.
WalleyeGerd
Does anyone have any info/tips for fishing walleyes on fourmile lake? I'm heading up there next weekend for the first time. Any info would be appreciated.
'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders monstermoose78 Posted June 7, 2013 'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders Share Posted June 7, 2013 I would start on the wind blown side of the lake in 2-4 feet and work my way out to deeper water. Just watch out for rocks in the shallow water. Best way not to loose a lot of jigs was to set a float. Leeches worked for us but minnows worked for my cousins who were in the boundry waters. I like bright colored jigs for the stained water up that way.
'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders monstermoose78 Posted June 10, 2013 'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders Share Posted June 10, 2013 The photos I said I would post. Sorry it took forever to get my dad to get me the photos.

buzz1ng
Went up to Cresent Thurs. & Fri. 1 walleye. About 30 Smallmouth. Trolled Cranks & Spinners. Weather was terrible & we couldnt take our small boats to far from the landing because of the Storms & Rain. If you go, make sure to bring a TON of Bug sparay. Mosquitos were the worst Ive ever seen them. FYI, Outfitters in Tofte are bringing all clients to 4 Mile Lake, Toohey LK & Wilson Lk, every spot on all 3 lakes were full. JBMasterAngler
I 2nd the mosquito part! When I was up there 2 weeks ago it was the worst I've ever experienced in the 25+ years I've been going there! I probably say that every year but this year for sure!
