I don't like to make prediction because injuries can play such a big part in season outcomes. I have always been a fan of Ballard and like the way he plays. Cooke is on our side now. If the goalies make the saves that they should and rob a 1 or 2 chances a game the Wild will be fun to watch. Parise, Coyle, Zucker, Pommer, Suter, and Brodin will be the leaders.

After the first day of training camp it sounds like Heatley is in much better shape than last year and he has been taking power skating lessons this off season. Good chance he'll be on the third line with Granlund

That's good news, too bad he waited till now to figure out he needed to be faster...the game has passed him by IMO and I don't see him being a big contributor on this team. I think they made some good moves this off-season and will be a better team.

Heatley has been on pace for 25 goals the past two seasons, I think he reaches that mark this year and that works for me. Then next year we can trade him in for a newer/younger version.

even more important than 25 goals in my eyes is that he will probably be put on the 3rd line with Granlund and if Heatley is as bad as he was last year, it will only make the youger guys development more difficult and they will give up a ton of goals. But this is encouraging! He's in a contract year and he still wants to play, we might get the Heatley from 3 years ago and that would be huge.

Wild drop preseason opener to Columbus 3-1. Mostly kids in the lineup, Nino got the goal from Coyle and Grandlund. Didn't watch the game but it sounds like the kids looked good, D not so much.

Hmmm the mini Wild short their 5 best players put a 4-1 whooping on the Jets who played their full roster. Sounds like the kids have looked good and Dumba has impressed so far. Still don't know if he is ready for the big show yet but its certainly a good sign.

Listened to the last half of the game last night. Other than marching to the sin bin a lot late it sure sounded like they were manhandling the Jets.

Really fun to see a camp with guys actually competing for roster spots vs. penciling in guys because they're the only viable option - or because they're the ONLY option, viable or not. Veterans getting pushed, and young guys competing with each other even for the chance to be the first call-up from Iowa. We will be seeing some guys who would make the opening day roster on a lot of teams in the league sent down to the AHL.

Big change from the days when Annti Miettenen was a top line winger... sick

I know right! Hard not to be excited these days, just looking at our roster and prospects 4-5 years back its just amazing to see the talent we have now. And the best news is a lot of that talent is in the prime or just entering the league about to hit their stride.

I think the Jets were 1-7 on the PP. Let the rivalry begin! When I first heard about the wild not playing their top guys, I figured we'd see 4-1 the other way. Nice to see the young guys stepping up for sure.

Anyone know how Heatley did???

Heately was pretty good apparently. He's evidently in great shape and quicker than he wast last year. Saw the replay of the Coyle goal he assisted on and it was a beauty of a give and go - cross-crease saucer pass right onto Coyle's stick for a tap-in.

Heatley was just OK, 1 assist, 1 shot on goal, ZERO on plus minus, 1 penalty in almost 18 minutes on the ice.

Heatly WILL have a great year. I now say 25 goals, wouldnt be surprised to see 30-contract year for him & he comes to camp in stellar condition. Parise will see 40 goals if he skates with Poms and Koivu.

Remember, the Wild logged 10,000 more travel miles than any other team last year. The realignment travel time favors MN in a huge way, more than other clubs imo.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
