Hey Guys! Please check-in, say hi, & let us know when/where you'll be hunting this spring!

I'll be hunting in Nebraska April 10-13 & the MN archery season in May. Going to give it a go with the recurve this spring - hopefully the new decoy brings them in tight!

If you've got a suggestion for a team name, please post it!

Season B April 22-26 on public land in zone 508 is where I'll be. I hope I don't have to sit in snow.

I think you'll be safe by then... hopefully! I'm actually happy to be hunting in May in MN this year.

We're just waiting for Just1fish... and we'll all be accounted for. We're starting at a disadvantage w/ only 5 of us while some teams have 6 so we'll have to bring our A game this spring!

Well guys, I was fortunate to score some nice hooks for the Hook Hunter's, but unfortunately I forgot to pack my scale! It got a little warm one day and we had to get our birds cleaned & on ice. So I won't be able to register him in the contest. But I plan on getting an archery tag for MN and will do my best to help the team out in May! Good luck guys on your upcoming hunts!

Hey guys! Pike here, i am hunting 1st season right now around zumbrota-mazeppa area. Was out this morning and got close but couldn't seal the deal on a nice tom, it was out at 75 yards. Tonight i am going to a different property and will have a better chance. The birds are just too into their winter groove still on the morning property. Have around 15-20 gobblers on tonights property so that should make it easier to call a few in to the decoys. As long as the rain holds off it should be game over for a bird tonight!

laker1, there isn't much gobbling on most of my properties around zumbrota but on some of them there is definitely more activity then the others, this morning there was some gobbling with the 2 toms that were roosted nearby our setup.

Stick, i hope i can get one tonight but this a really good property. i wanted to hunt close to home this am because i had to get to school early. So i chose a place a mile from my house. This property is my main property that i will be on tonight and i have been extensively scouting it for a while now. The birds are really active on it and have been gobbling and strutting around for a couple weeks already.

Make sure to take lots of good pics and enter them in the photo contest! If there's a bunch, examine them with the binocs and make sure to pick one out with some long hooks! grin

Haha (aka did i get one) no not last night or this morning for that matter. Unfortunately there was a guy trespassing unintentionally right where i wanted to set up last night. It wasn't a huge deal as i talked to the land owner with him and he felt bad that he was about 250 yards onto the wrong property. He was an older gentleman, and was very sorry about it so it wasn't a major problem. Tonight i will be going out to that spot so hopefully my luck will turn around.

Snowing hard up this way right now... 10-12" forecasted! Hope you don't have any of that down where you're at. Good luck tonight!

Well boys i ended up getting one today at 315pm. So here is the story....

It started out wed. morning, i was hunting with a couple buddies whom were filming for me. We had one come in to about 75 yards behind us. We were looking to get some good footage so we didn't put a stalk on it also we didn't want to bump many birds around. Wednesday night through Friday around noon it was snowing or raining so hunting was slow or non-existant. Friday night i roosted a flock of 3 gobblers with 8 hens, it was going to be very nice saturday morning so i was excited. On saturday morning when i arrived the birds were not there which was frustrating, they also didn't make any noise as it was 25-29 degrees until about 9am so that dampered any possible success. Saturday night i had 4 hens at 8 yards from my blind but no gobblers showed. Had to go to church with my family at 8am today so i couldn't go out this am which was also frustrating. So at 245 i headed out to my blind and i was ready to do whatever it was going to take to put a bird on the ground. As i was about 50 yards from my blind i let out a series of yelps which triggered a gobble only 100 yards away. I quickly got into my blind and called a few more times and the gobbles got closer and closer, eventually the bird came out from the woods and was 55 yards away from me in the bean field. I shut up and the bird started strutting and kept getting closer. When the bird hit 25 yards i hit to loud yelps and he put his head up....He was aquainted with my #5 load.

Ended up being 22lbs, with 9.5" beard, and 7/8" spurs

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
