Hello to all,

I am bringing my 10 year old up for the last weekend of eye fishing . Renting a house from Dickies. I have never used them before. Not many houses left after calling many resorts (They had 1). Any concerns, good, bad? He is pumped To be sleeping on the ice for the weekend. Me too, just want to have a good time with him. Thank god is pretty cool with not catching a ton of fish... Thanks for any and all replies. Will let you know on Sunday how it went.

Well, that's not what I wanted to hear!!! Any reasons? There is no cancellation fees involved, but if I cannot find anything else I still think the weekend on the ice with the boy beats just about anything else. Please explain very bad. Thank you...

I had the displeasure of staying in one of the dumps he calls an icehouse about 15 yrs. ago and he still uses the same houses. Can't say I've ever heard a good report from his "operation". Kid might enjoy a rustic experience, depends on the kid I guess. Good Luck!

I've never stayed at either. That being said, I've heard people speak well of WW, which seems to be much more than Dickies. I'd trust TRZ if it was my kid/money.

I was in the same situation as you last year. Rotten spongy floors, nasty old wood. Mattress' from the 70s. I don't know about what the other houses look like but the one I was in was serviceable at best.

What size house did you stay in? We are heading up this weekend for the first time. Hopefully the large one is nice enough to sleep in for a couple nights.

We will be in a 8 hole 4 bunk house. I think it is 8 X 16 ?? Are going out of Liberty (Dickies) also? If so, we will have to hook up and say hello...

If WW has an open house go with them for SURE. Their houses are not fancy but they are clean and decent. Last weeeknd they were also on deep mud where the big perch live. Jay is a good guy to rent from and you will be happy with the rentals they have compared to Dickies. I caught a 2lb perch out there 2 yrs. ago. the day after the contest... smirk

I can only hope they are newer houses after the responses I have been reading. smile Hope and pray. I still think we will have fun. Plus it is the perch extravaganza this weekend. Maybe we will win an Ice Castle and never need to worry about his again !!!!!!!! Thanks again for all the replies. Good or bad I do appreciate them.

Stayed in one of his houses about 4 years ago. It was a dump, and I'm not to picky when it comes to places I stay. The "mattress" was a piece of rotten stained foam, and the inside of the house looked like $hit. I remember it was about the same price as other resorts too. Ive never been back, or cared to go back

TRZ II, I just switched to a WW house. Thank you. They actually hasd three left. Thanks gain. Now, bring on the Jumbo's. I think my boy would dump himself if caught a 2# perch.

TRZ II, thank you for the recommendation. Amber from Wildernes Warmth was great. The house was clean and comfortable. Oh, and my ten year old pulled in a 26 on a perch pole with 4 # test.He yelled "this is the best day of my life" . Sunday he asked if we could just live out here. An awesome weekend. Thanks again .

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
