new flasher??

RHW

Question

I see Vexilar is promoting what they are calling their new product, the FL-8 SE.
It is about $100 cheaper then the FL-18 and when you go to their web site, no mention even of the FL-18.
So does anybody know the difference between the two units and how good is the FL-8 SE?

Has nothing to do with the screen.

From Vexilar.
"The gain controls how much the reflected signal coming back from the water is amplified."

My point is plankton to sounders is what chaff is to radar. My experience with a Vex is that plankton clutters it enough to make it useless in these conditions.
The higher watts sounders seem to have less problems with plankton while still showing a jig. Hey when are we going fishing anyway. smile.gif

I don't know for sure, but if there was more power wouldn't it be easier to see the plankton? If you can see a 1/32 oz jig down 40' w/out plankton with ease. I still cant see how you could see it down 40' with the plankton around. I guess this is one of these see it to believe it things.

The amplified signal is on the screen is what I was refering to.

One trick to seperate your jig from clutter is to upsize your jig if you can get away with it. Turn the gain down and tie on a jig that holds more lead. If the bite is hot, you may even be able to switch to spoons or swimming baits.

Derek good point. The shape of the jig makes a difference too. Pimples are usually heavier then most of jigs I use but they have that Stealth design.

It's all relative, plankton will give off a much weaker signal than even the smallest jig. You need to set your gain just high enough to see your jig - when you do that, you will eliminate the majority of the noise.

I am sure both units perform well and were designed to use the power and recievers to get the best possible signal.
I have had an 18 for two years now and love it.But...I fished next to an LX3 last year and was very impressed.
I fish a lot of crowded lakes and I was constantly trying to cut out signals from other flashers.Sometimes it was just no use.The LX3 cut out the interferance with out having to "fine tune" it constantly.I like that.I want to spend as little time monkeying with the unit and just fish. The other thing I think the Marcum had over the 18 was the target separation. It was definatley picking up fish that my Vex was not and it showed the signals cleaner and easier to read.Thats not just fish in the outer cone but directly below me.The adjustable zoom was an obvious advantage. There were too many times that fish would come in just above the 6 foot zoom.I like to see things up close and personal.I want the zoom where the fish are.No sense straining to see little blips on a big dial when you can have them big and in your face.
I think both units are great but I think Marcum has the upper hand right now.I am going to get one for this year season.

The next question is, when there are many of the newer generation Marcums out on the ice, won't the Marcums be just as prone to interfering with each other as the Vexlilars are?

In other words, if you've got two Marcum LX-3s in the same house, or a dozen yards away from each other, do they have the same IR features to prevent interference as the Vexilars do?

STF,

IMO,I dont think LX-3's will have a problem with each other.I know I've fished an area with 6 LX3 with no problems. We've had 3 Lx3 in the same tent without interference.

Time will tell as more Marcum's hit the ice whether or not it will be a problem.

Do either of these units ever go on sale? All I ever see is $399 in almost all stores.

Can either of these units show you the depth accurately without drilling a hole? or do you need to buy a separate 'flashlight-looking' unit for that?

G-man,

Can't help you with the for sale thing.

Both units can shoot thru most ice conditions and a lot of the time can also mark fish through the ice. All you need to do is get a little water on top of the ice. I usually carry a little bottle of water for just this purpose.

G-man if you sign up for a credit card at GM they will give you 10% off of your first purchace, which is good for 40 bucks on the lx3.

The flasher debate this year.... I think both units perform well and are comparable. No one has said this, but Vexilar has outstanding customer service. I have been treated like a king everytime. This is why I am staying using vexilar, by a thin thread.
I attend to agree with Scott on the Lowrance units in that I really don't think they are going to be that popular for this season.

I don't know guys, I have tried to run pops 18 a few times. He seems to like it, but I'm afraid your going to have to pull the old fl8-slt out of my dead cold hand before I switch to anything. I just can't imagine a more simple, reliable unit that does everything you could want. Still have not seen anything that these new units can do that mine can't. To me the few new features will deffinitely not translate into more fish just more bells.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
