Snow Goose 2013

Recommended Posts

I don't doubt I was hearing your gunfire Saturday B-Radical, that fog was radical and a good friends knickname is Radical B lol. What surprised me the most was how the geese we saw were sitting just off the road, I assumed as smart as they are they'd be at nearly inaccessable fields or something but all I know are MN honkers but maybe that is a smart thing the snow geese do. These guys just off the highway I thought no way, trucks maybe 200 yards from their spread, looked up and they had hundreds of geese circling down on them and they made hay, I learned quickly that I know squat about the snow goose spring hunt lol. The boys were set up for a reason. Got 2 MN snow's since 1979 and hoping for this wkd my first ND snow goose. Bringing the 3.5" with for sure as everything we saw was right on the range limit.

Nice going B-rad

Gotta love the low flying adults on the foggy days, one of the best ways to kill the old wise ones, also good way to cash in on some bling.

We were 8 miles south of Ellendale on the SD side of the line. nice flooded corn field really attracted the birds.

cant wait till next year now that I have the itch!.

Right on we did alright in ND on saturday and sunday. Birds were already north of 94 come saturday evening, not the mother load, but maybe 40K or so, we found a big feed near 94 saturday night. Set up on it sunday morning, plenty came back. What will the warm up do to them ? How long do they linger around or is it bust north asap ?

Had 1 weird exchange with a ND CO. He asked me are you going to hunt this field I said sure might as well. He said I drive by here all the time and have hardly seen a bird. Before we left that evening we saw roughly 100K of them and the weekend before same field we saw maybe 50K. Got plenty, what was his motivation ? They poured over us for 3 straight hours ? Didn't understand that and being out of state didn't understand why he didn't check my license etc. Less than 5 minutes after he left we got bird # 1 and from then on it was put your head on a swivel they were every direction ?

100k and 50k in one field? How big was that one field?

Plenty of geese everywhere in ND. They will be around until the season closes...

Flying over and around that is, not actually gutting the field of every kernel of corn lol, but they wanted to. The weekend before there were maybe 20K in that field on the ground, actually who knows how many we truly saw but it is the most I've ever seen in my lifetime and many said there was nothing around but my shoulder is still sore 2 days later lol. What was the CO's motive ? Seemed really odd, he no more than drove off, I'm sure he saw them, 3 hours of white geese airborn in every direction ? The birds hang in there that long ? Definite rookie to the spring snow goose hunt but it was really fun for sure. I bet some dudes have gotten in serious mud/roads out there, we stuck to the pavement and still found several feeds no 1 was bothering.

Nothing better than a sore shoulder. One day a buddy and I shot 28 boxes of shells. My head hurt so bad that I didn't even shot that evening. But we shot 365 geese that day so it was good.

The CO was there for a reason I'm sure. Looking for MN plates probably. ..

Right on BL13, I was just confused by the opening line, you planning to hunt here ? Yes. Well I haven't seen any birds around here. I drive by here a lot. I wanted to say well if nothing is around here why are you around here lol. We saw maybe 40-50 thousand birds after he left, shortly after and put some of them down for the count. It was just a really weird exchange and he didn't want to see my license, idk. However you stack it, it sure was fun to have thousands of honkers, lessers, specks decoying and eventually snows and blues, also seeing fields that were just thrashed by thousands of geese, man they can really tear it up.

With snow geese it seems the CO's don't really care what your doing as long as your shooting em. I talked to one and he said I should be shooting lead.

Migration seems to be farther west this year.

Just finally got a chance to finish drying and storing my decoys. Noticed another visual to share with those that have never witnessed the magnitude of the snow goose migration. I would guesstimate that well over 1/2 of my decoys had a goose dropping on it with many having multiple hits. My truck had at least a dozen hits. Hate to hazzard a guess as to how many poos were launched to attain such a high mark rate.

That's funny as heck Bryce! Only time ive had that happen is with mallards. Not ear that high of a hit percentage but I got a good laugh out of it. You ever take a "direct hit?"

One confirmed hit in the group. I had many hit either my blind, or the dog blind and e-caller right next to me. Also had the young dog decide to roll in a recycled ribeye. She wasn't pleased with the ice water hose bath out of the farm hydrant.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
