Fun Night!

Recommended Posts

We had a pretty fun night last night but let a few get away.

First set had Mitch and I hunting a pretty small field that we've had luck in the past. Mitch was sitting by a haybine facing south in a with a narrow chute in the field behind him while I was 30 yards to his right. I had been calling for a while and was thinking of pulling the pin when out of the corner of my eye I see a big coyote fly by the caller. Before I could get on it, it turns and runs back, right past Mitch! He said he thought he heard something and turned his head and it ran by at about 15' and then ran past him going the other way at about 30'. That's his third close encounter this year already and I think he better take the shotgun with next time.

Second was blank

Third set we hunted a new farm and had a pretty long walk in. I set up the caller 40 yards East of us and sat down next to Mitch. I was watching the field to the NE and he was facing South. I let out a howl and immediately heard what sounded like a squeeking noises. I looked back and with the wind blowing, though it was a something blowing in the farm yard. Mitch thought his sling swivel had made it. All of a sudden, 4 came up over a slight rise and were 60 yards from me. I told Mit, four on the left and slowly turned to the left. One stopped and started trying to get downwind of us. Then another one turned as well and I knew I had to take the shot. He was facing me when the 17 barked and folded him up. The others bugged out over the rise and never saw them agian.

Here he is. Nice heavy fur.

Fourth was a blank.

Fifth set called a tough spot and was pushing our luck with the wind and it almost paid off but I ended up missing one at about 200 so we called it a night after that.
