This will be the third year a bunch of us get-to-gather to fish and meet for lunch on the lake. It's not an overly thought out event with races or feats or great effort. Just a bunch of people getting together to meet and grill some dogs at lunch and have a few cold ones "because pop gets cold on ice" grin I think I heard rumor that that "brat" guy will be there with a few friends and some homemade brats as well.

It's Potluck so bring what you can to share. HQ will be in about the same spot by a white pickup and a Green Saturn Vue with sled trailer on it! Or just smell and look for Brats cooking? grin

I was there last year and will be again this year. It was a great time and maybe this year I'll catch a fish on top of it, but if not, I know the food and company will be great!!! Thanks for the post, Leech! Jim

I was on Grindstone last Wedsnday with Archerysniper and Polarispro and we ended up spearing one pike but seen lots of trout. Wish I could make this one sounds like way to much fun.

Have fun and please post a ton of pics.

3 days to go until the GTG. If you have no plans for this Sat and have never fished the lake give it a try or just swing by for lunch on the ice. Read back on post to see where HQ will be setup. Bring something to share if you can or just drop in and chat.

I may even give up one of my Laker spots on the lake! frowngrin

It's not going to be anywhere near big as the Burntside bash but if you can't make it up there for that one stop in and say hi at this one! smile

I have been intrigued by this lake for quite some time, but haven't fished it yet. This sounds like a good opportunity to get an idea of how to best fish this unique lake.

I am going to do my best to get up there on Saturday and see if I can learn a thing or two!

Not sure you will need any steaks as the plan is to have a ton of home made smoked brats. But I can bring one if some people would rather have grilled brats then boiled? wink

Okay, just the brownies then. No one ever turned down a brownie, right?
Nope need those extra calories for energy to stay warm in the winter! grin

Sorry, doesn't really say. GTG will be near the red barn landing? Noon?
Opps, read the 10th post down. I guess I didn't put that on the first one.

It will be out to the right of the Red Barn Landing at Noon. See 10th post down from top one! There are GPS cords to the Landing if you have never been here. smile

I have an HSO hat to give away for the largest trout brought to the GTG lunch.

Looks like it's going to be a nice day, see you all there!

My plan for the day is to start fishing Rainbows in the morning and Lakers after lunch. I will be there from sun up until sun down riding this around the lake if you see me running around. Honk! grin

If I am able to make it out there tomorrow, what are your recommendations for a good starting place? I have never fished trout through the ice before, but from what I have heard, they move shallower to feed in the winter.

I plan on bringing some waxies, suckers and crappie minnows. Are tip-ups a good idea? How about for tackle? Spoons and Jigging Raps?

If I can get out there, I will be in an old red Ford F-150 and a Shappell Hub Style house.

Thanks,

Joe

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .
    • SkunkedAgain
Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
