Just wondering if anyone hear has ever tried the Boundary Waters LCD unit made by vexilar. Since it uses AA batteries instead of a gel cel, I thought it might work pretty slick. I am assuming that it won't give me great detail but enough to find humps, drops, etc. Thanks folks.

Used one for several years, and it works really well on the canoe. I shoot through the hull on both kevlar and aluminum canoes, to cut down on drag.
Detail isn't the best, but usually it is possible to pick up fish on the thing after you get the hang of it. Best of all is its small size. I mount mine to the thwart forward of me with a velcro strap or a pipe clamp. Battery life in these things is excellent.

They are worth their weight in gold in the BWCAW. Never had a problem with one, and the battery life seems to go forever!

Should have looked a little more closely, as my locater is the LC-10, which is NOT a color unit. Shelled out around $250 for it, and I think the new (color) ones are over $300. The new color ones look real nifty, and I'll have to see if I can't somehow justify it.....
If you like to fish and explore in new waters, these things are extremely helpful in locating reefs, eliminating fishless areas, etc. Found a deep weed reef last summer I have been paddling over for years, and really smacked some nice walleyes when we went back and tried it.
We have a case for ours for packing and portaging, which slides real nicely into my pack. In the little zippered pocket of the case are extra batteries and a coin for the screws.

I'm heading up Wednesday night with a crew to hit Lake One for a four day weekend. You wouldn't happen to have any favorite campsites or honey holes you'd be willing to give up? I'm willing to fish for anything and everything. Yes, I will be accompanied by sandal, cargo short, and sombrero wearing people. LOL

Awesome unit! Very light, great on batterys and great read. Even threw a canoe but better in water. Good value. I want to try out the color unit as well.

Never really spent any time fishing on Lake One - seems like we always go screaming through on our way to other lakes. There are some nice looking campsites along the way, although they are for the most part heavily used. Fish-wise I would be thinking about current areas now, starting shallower and working deeper. Water is cooling down. Think minnows.

About what I figured for fishing tactics, the BW LCD looks like it would work great for long trips, I'll be using an FL8 this weekend. No problem with weight on this trip, an hour paddle, set up camp, go fishing.
Good luck to you if you pursue any fish and or game this weekend.

Seems like a lot of money to me for what your getting. Overall it's great, but look at it from a power, pixels, features stand point and it's really not that great of unit. The value really comes through with the carrying case and AA battery system but it that worth 200 bones? Will have to wait and see but right now it doesn't look like there are many other options.

There are some new Piranha units out there which are portable, and very reasonably priced, which you may want to check out. There is a comparison of the Piranha vs. the Vexilar that I think you can link to off of the Red Rock Wilderness Store site, if you want some more detail.

Is it worth the $200. You betch it is. I have the CLC-200 and it performed awesome on my latest trip to Canada. I felt bad for the other guys hauling around heavy batteries and those other "so-called" portable units with crappy transducer brackets 8 AA Batteries lasted 5 days along with a light transducer with a suction cup. Made my life so much easier.

I have found another unit that may compete with the vex. A lowrance x47. An accessory for this unit is a portable kit that runs off of AA bats. Not quite as compact as the vexilar but about 170 bucks cheaper. I will have to make a decision by spring.

      On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

      Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
